  • My Temporary car shelter effed up my skyline...

So I don't have a garage, so I bought a 12x20 car shelter from Canadian tire and that's where my skylines been living.
Last weekend there was a hell of a wind storm, (90kmh gusts) and it picked up the shelter and threw it onto my car,a few times.

So it made deep gouges in the paint on the hood and fender, deep scrapes in the front bumper, dented the back left quarter, and the roof, and scratched up one of the rear quarters aswell., Oh it also scraped my drivers mirror and cracked the mount for it too.

All in all, it effed up my car.

I called insurance, cans the adjuster came out today, (I think I was fortunate that he is a big car buff and totally loves skylines) and after 3 pages of damages on the quote, the grand total is about 3500$ worth of bodywork and paint.

So off to the restoration shop it goes. Lets hope she comes out all shiny and new

Moral of the story, keep insurance on your car -at least comprehensive in the winter- and keep your car in a solid structure like a garage, or a shipping container.

    Just sayin

Ouch..that sucks man. At least you have it covered though! Out of curiosity, did you already declare any mods to them before ( if you have any) I've heard of undeclared modified vehicles being rejected for claims..

Did the structure blow away? what part of it made contact with the car?

EDIT: never mind. How did you have it fastened down? I am going to be picking one of these up in the spring then screwing it to 2"x4"s then anchoring it into my driveway.

I have a tent similar to that as well, they usually come with some pins that you can use to help keep it on the ground

Back in 2011 there was a hurricane that went through Moncton... I spent the whole night (yes hours on end) using myself as structural support to protect my GTR.

The next day I brought her to a warehouse for winter storage and the temporary shelter collapsed under structural failure a few days later (pipes sheared off during the storm and eventually crumpled under the weight)

EDIT: Through it all there was some hazing from the tarps rubbing against the paint and one of the concrete blocks had been pushed against the front lip and paint, minor scuffs.

that is one thing that scares me too, i've stored my GTR in a shelter for the past 3 winters, and i'm scared it will come down on it
i'm fortunate that its a very strong and huge shelft about 60" long, sandwhich between the garage and the fence, protected from the wind, but not against 3-4' of snow..

but the worst is the animals.. cats..
i've put steel whool in te exhaust to prevent rodents from going in to make a nest, but the dam cats keep trying to squeeze under the cover, scratching the bumpers, and they jumps on the car to sleep since the cover is paded,
so in the spring when i take it out, the car is covered with gravel that the cats pickup under their paws, and also a shi t load of hair balls

just a couple weeks ago, i took the car out of the shelter to take the suspension off, but i was supposed to do that months ago, so the car had been in the shelter all that time without a cover, when i took it into the garage i saw my error, the car had never been so dirty in its life, because of the fawking animals

                anyway, i hate shelters
but it beats paying 500$+ a year for storage

Nuts! I just got notice from bylaw that I would get a ticket if I didn't take my down this weekend. I bought one for my wrx since my other cars are in my shop and didn't know they weren't legal in red deer... So I'm out $400 and have no where to keep it from the elements. Guess the reason they're restricted is because it's happened often that they would take off with wind and damage things where insurance wouldn't cover the dmg or no one would claim ownership.

                  Sucks to hear...

Nice cars belong is garages, sorry to say.

I had that picture in my head when I said a container is a better solution ... I like those but I priced one and it was $2000 plus delivery :-/

Yeah I've used the same shelters, Best to bolt the legs to 2 x 10's and then put your spare RB26's on the 2 x 10's to hold it down.

                              youre looking at around 4200.

                              the 20' container was 2000,
                              the door was 1500,
delivery from montreal- brockville was 700.

theres enough room with the doors open to work on the car. if you like you can get a 2nd door on the other side (added cost obviously) There is plenty of room (length wise) for storing other things. The best part is you can open the main door at the end and nose the car out so you dont ruin your back working in the engine bay.

Its obviously not better than a garage, but at my parents (where the car is) it would be super tough to get a building permit and would obviously get more expensive than 4200.
