  • My first skyline

    Hi all,

after many hours of browsing the depths of the internet, I'm still unsure whether or not a skyline is the right car for me.

Currently I've got my eye on a HCR32 with a RB20DET (previously thought to be rb25det), 176km, all stock except for a CA intake and a cat-back exhaust. ~$4000

Since getting my driver's licence exactly a year ago I have been captivated by cars. Before that I didn't really have much interest, resulting in little to no mechanical background. I regret not even taking a mechanics class in highschool. I've taught myself everything there is to know about bicycle mechanics (excluding susp) as I ride at an expert level. However, I am wondering about if getting into a skyline is a bad choice. I want to learn more about auto repair, but that doesn't necessarily mean I want an un-driveable skyline sitting in my yard for a year till I decide to give up and sell it.

Seeing as the car is stock, I'm hoping is should be fairly reliable. If it proves to be, I might also get a winter/school (60km commute everyday) car (ie mk2 gti), and do some maintenance and maybe some small upgrades over the winter.

Additional Info: I plan on getting the car inspected prior to purchase. I'm a full time university student/ working. I would love to own a skyline. I currently drive a mk4 golf.

Any help is appreciated, sorry if the question is sort of unclear. I guess it boils down to the "is this a reliable car"/ "is this car easy to work on", but provided some personal info I was wondering if I could receive a more revised answer.

    Thanks

I'm in BC and got quoted on $110/month, which is a treat compared to the 180 I pay currently, or to the $230 for an e46 328ci i was thinking about buying previously.

How the hell is your insurance 110 a month? That bare minimum? There is no way someone with just getting a license has that good of a rate.

That's with no collison/ 1 mill liability/ 5% discount (year of clean driving) but still, she said that once a car is so old they're all the same. I got $110/month quote for a 1990 skyline (regardless of model), a 1g dsm talon awd, or a mk2 gti.

are you looking at the red r32 skyline on vic island? If you are, you shud take a closer look at the engine, its a RB20 not a RB25

Have you seen the car in person? I only spoke to him very briefly and he didn't really seem to know anything about the car. It was someone in his families or something, he was at work and i couldn't really hear.

I have trouble buying cars like this off people who dont know a thing about them. Gives me a bad feeling. Would you buy a parachute off someone who doesnt know what it is? And that insurance is cheap. I have a 30 percent discount i pay 120 a month on my GTR.

It all depends on your location for insurance rates..

a skyline on the island with the bare minimum $110 sounds normal.

When i had my skyline insured on the island it was $610 a year, with max discount.

                  anyways... its a RB20
th RB25'as have 2 humps on the timing belt cover.
                  RB25

                  RB20

                  Here is the Sale add

The seller doesnt really seem to know much about it..
if you can get it for $2500 then i would say do it..

                    Shows how much I know...

You think it's only worth $2500 if everything is running well?

Any other opinions on whether I should be getting into a skyline, or leaving it for later on in life.

Everything I read sounds as though it is an incredible car, but I guess I'm just trying to figure out if I will regret getting one. I'm still unsure on what sort of up-keep to expect aside from the norm.

Random question; is the gtr the same shell as the rest of the r32s? Specifically the roof (for a roof rack).

Gtrs have the same basic shape, windows and doors. The fenders are different, as well as the bumper, spoiler. Im fairly sure the rood is the same though..

It all depends on you. Keep in mind it's a RHD car. If you have never driven a RHD go take it on a long test drive with my left turns and see if it's right fit for you. I myself have no issues driving a RHD car. (and I live downtown Victoria). From the pic's it looks like a clean car. One question you should be asking is how many owners it has had in Canada (some JDM's get passed around like crazy take that red R33 GTS25T with gold rims that's for sale by a different person every week on craigslist or my old FD with a 02 body I have seen if for sale 4 times last year all different people (poor car )

R32s have the same roof. There are no tracks along the roof for racks, so if you want racks you will have to do adapters down into the door frame or drill through the roof.
