  • Help: Engine rb26 engine problems!

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums just needed some advice be much appreciated.
I took my r32 to the shop to replace the headgasket (had small leak) Took the head to the machine shop, head was fine no warping or nothing. Put everything back together and the camshaft broke. The guy at the shop told me he thought the heat from the exhaust manifold, when the engine overheated from the head gasket leak, kind of warped the camshaft to make it break. He's telling me to line bore my head or get a different head. They also did the timing on it too, could the piston and a valve collide if the timing isn't adjusted properly.
I'm just wondering if hes giving me a run around or could a camshaft really break. Seems kind of fishy to me.

    Thanks for your input guys!

Usually camshaft breaks when mechanic tightens cam caps with lobes in wrong position, or drops cam some of them quite fragile

Correct, If the cams aren't tightened down in the correct stages/sequence it will lead to them snapping. Due to their low tensile strenght.

Depending how far the timing was out, depends on if the piston has hit any valves.

Was the car running when the cam shaft "snapped"?

The cams would have been tightened down incorrectly . Where did you take it ? a Nissan dealership ?

The minor head gasket leak will not generate enough heat upstairs to bend or break a cam shaft . And seeing as how it was probably running prior to dis-assembly id suggest this damage was done upon reassembly. You shouldnt need to linebore the cam bearings unless you are installing new cams or the cam bearings are out of spec .

I don't like to make assuptions without all the facts but it sounds very much like your mechanic did more damage than good to the engine - it's easy to do if you're unfamiliar with certain engines , i have done it myself ( not to an RB but to a few other engines - all my own i'll add) .
