  • trim molding replacement due to repaint ??

Oem option is a bit too rich for my blood : 1000$ give or take.

Anyone had to replace these trims, what were your option ? how you done it ? I wish to remove my trim in order to paint under the trim so no paint start cracking in a few years, but I will deal with it if my only option is to pay 1000$

There's probably a "jobber" seal you could get from a glass shop. Might even look better than oem

You can lift the edge of trim around window with piano wire or something like that which is similar to painting under the trim. Rear 1/4 window trim needs to be replaced on both sides, windows removed to do a proper job.

With front and rear windows, the inner trim clips onto outer trim that's stuck onto chassis via I think is double sided tape??? If look at inner trim there's little gaps you can see on the side and from memory that's where the clips are and you put the trim removal tool to remove the trim without damaging it.

From lower window trim clips need to be replaced.

If pulling out windows, the rear window can break when removing it, so would need a replaement if going that way to properly repaint the car.

Theres just as much chance of the front window cracking when compared to the rear. If you get a glass removal place to do it they will cut through the mouldings which is why it needs replacing. Also most of us our trim is 20 yrs old on our door windows. In my case the two around the top of the door are cracked and brittle, and the ones on the lower portion of the window is shriveled and wrinkled, no longer goes the full stretch of the door.
            I would like to replace:
            rear quarter pannel mouldings driver/passenger
            rear window moulding
            front window moulding
            drive/passenger upper trim inside/outside
            driver/passenger lower trim inside/outside.
I've found quotes for front and rear windows at ~230 a set so thats 460 right away.
The driver upper weatherstripping appears to be 125+ shipping for each side so thats another 250. Puts the total up to 710, still need to get the quarter glass and the 2 lower trims for both door windows. May as well get new clips for everything as well since its 20 yrs old and likely to crack even if you have the proper tools for removal. No clue what that all costs, and then add tax and shipping =\...any of the sponsers got like a full kit or willing to set up a group buy? I know daryl has done this in the past would be cool to see it again.

Yeah my front and rear windshield have shrunken mouldings. Do you think the right auto glass shop would replace the trims with a custom style? I'm thinking I might as well get the windows tinted while they're out aswell. Front windshield is destroyed and needs to be replaced anyways. Pardon me if this is a stupid question, but wouldn't they put new moulding on if the previous was damaged anyways? Had a few drinks, bear with me.

I'm sure they would replace it on a NA car and have jobber option as well if insurance is not paying, but if they can't find anything for a skyline.. I dunno... maybe they put custom one which might not look good but will do the job of sealing the glass.

If you're paying a glass co to make something custom for you you may as well get the proper one as its going to be close to same price anyways i'd think. Cost em alot more to do a 1 off for someone than if it was a common thing.

I did this on my cars when I painted them. It did add over 1000 to the cost but it's worth it to do it right.

Front and rear windshields you have no choice but to get the factory pieces. They WILL break when removed, almost 100%. Me, my body guy, and glass guy all looked for something "jobber" or "aftermarket" that would work but no dice.
Yes OEM are expensive, but RightDrive's kits come with all the pieces you need, clips, etc.
Adam at Feast can put together the kits as well.

For the quarter windows, the trim and window is all one piece so you'll have to get new quarter glass to replace trims and all.
If they come out unbroken, you can mask off the glass portion and blast the trim portion with paint and see how it works. Mine both broke so I just replaced them.

For the doors, I got new trims for the bottom of the window on the outside (comes with all new clips). They weren't too bad for cost.
Inside bottom of window, same thing. They detach from the door panels easily and aren't too costly.

As for the big ones along the top/back of the door windows on the outside, I removed them, scuffed and painted them with the trim paint. Even though they're flexible they looked brand new and lasted until I sold the GTST four years later. GTR still looks good too.

You will likely want to replace the big rubber seals that fit into those pieces and seal the windows. They rip in the corners. They are a bit pricey too though.
