  • redline for bnr32?

hey guys, i own a '56 000 kms'(thats what speedo says, no way to be sure tho) 1990 bnr32 and sometimes the gears are a bit hard to shift (needs force to be put in). No cunch tho. but even if the car is really 56k kms its still a 24 years old car. and 24 years old oil that has never been changed probably needs to be changed right( i have no idea if it has ever been changed. any way to check it without emptying it)? anyway, im thinking about changing the tranny oil and heard about redline heavy/lightweight shookproof. Can't really get my mind straight since some people don't like it and some people swear by it. question is: should i go with heavy or lightweight? pros and cons?

    thanks

Redline heavy shockproof seems to work very we'll in our trannies. If ur not sure how old it is, just change it.
Sounds like it might be your clutch though, bleed it first then see how it acts. How far off the floor is your engagement?

About 1/2"-1" from the floor. Altho i dont think its the stock clutch. Aren't some clutch set to engage near floor? Cuz mine doesnt slip, no noise. I took the car to the garage last week to check master/slave cylinder. He said they were fine exempt the reservoir was very low and added fluid. Also bled it.

Mine always engaged normally, then one day it was near the floor. Same deal fluid was low, topped up and bled, was ok for a bit then happened a couple more times. Ended up being bad master. Couldn't even tell till I removed it.
If its the proper parts in there it shouldn't engage right off the floor, aftermarket or not.

This is another subject that's been explored thuroughly on here.
              The answer is this:
If your synchros are tired use the heavy shock proof as the additives will over a short time deterirorate the synchro material. However, your shifts will be smooth again until then.
If you just want to change the oil use the standard Redline transmission oil.
I've been using it for 5 years and many others globally have been successfully aswell.

Regarding fluids and preventitive maintenance components in your car the rule of thumb is this:
When in doubt change it out.

In your case change your trans oil with the regular Redline MT90 in my opinion.

              Good luck!

My third gear was a little rough sometimes so i changed my fluid with the Heavyweight and it seemed to work very well. No more grinding or hard to put into gear, but just remember this is only a temperary fix and it wont make things perfect.

some of my gears have just gotten a little bit notchy over time. no definite grinding just not at all as smooth as it used to be.

The onky problem I have with that very common belief about the Shockproofs is that if your syncros were on their way out, the heavy would make the shifting action worse....not better. I spoke with the Redline rep at SEMA and he said that the Shockproofs all are really a GL4 oil because the additives they use are different than the standard sulfer and phosforus that is commonly used in a hypoid GL5 rated oil. When I put it in my trans 2 years ago it made a noticable difference in shift effort, the gears were quieter overall and I no longer had to fight to get it into 1st gear when the trans was cold (which you would think the exact opposite would be the case with a very thick oil).

There are few refferences around but rest assured that the Heavy and Light Shockproofs will not attack your yellow metals in the trans. They lack the oldschool hypoid additives that do that.

                    Jon.

8000rpm is a pretty safe redline for BNR32

Redline oils are great. Used them in my stock gtr gearboxes for years, stock gtir gearbox for a year and now in my ppg dog box. I also did some mixing for the diffs at some point where i mixed the light and heavy for a medium oil. Worked great.
