Choosing a skyline

Sup guys,

So I've been saving up for a while and would like to get into a skyline. As I'm sure many of you know it's quite difficult to gain a collective experience of what exactly these things are like to drive before you buy. From my understanding the r32 feels light and nimble while the r33 feels bigger and is slightly more heavy. The r34 however is kind of a happy medium, feeling bigger than the r32 but not as weighted as the 33. This is only what I've I heard and like I've stated above not from collective experience.

In terms of looks I think that the side view of an r33 looks a bit like a confused impala but from every other angle it looks great IMO. At first I didn't like the look of it but after some time I actually think there's something maybe special about it. Like perhaps in 5/10 years from now they will be highly sought after.

The reason why I've choose to go the skyline rout is because of the simple fact that the gtr models are AWD as well as obviously the ease of tuning. I've heard that the rb26 is the engine everyone seems to be going for but yet the 25 is apparently a bit more reliable.

Clearly you can see why it's a tough pick as a newbie. I guess I'm just looking for others who have had the opportunity to drive various models to help ease my decision. My budget is $15000 Max and unless the r34 gtt is something you guys would think is in contention.. I think I would either go R32GTR or R33GTR.

Please let me know what you guys think and what I might expect to pay for either taking into account I will be importing the vehicle myself.

My budget is $15000 Max and unless the r34 gtt is something you guys would think is in contention.. I think I would either go R32GTR or R33GTR.
Please let me know what you guys think and what I might expect to pay for either taking into account I will be importing the vehicle myself.

I personally think you should very carefully consider not buying a GTR at all with a budget of $15,000 while expecting to import it yourself.

Looking through the buy/sell here, most R32 are over $10,000, and R33s are a fair amount more. Reasoning that people infrequently make money on used cars, imagine what they cost to get here.

The costs of getting here and legal eat into the budget severely. Likely with these cars, which all the R32's are at least 21 years old, you'll encounter repairs and replacements that will push the cost even higher.

Additionally: If the car is already here, you have the benefit of possibly looking at it yourself. You get what you get when you buy from Japan. My R34 was overall better than I expected it to be, but it wasn't without minor issues I didn't anticipate (e.g. will probably need a brake service sooner than I expected).

I wrote an entire thread down to the penny of what it costs to get a car from auction to registered in BC if you search. In fact, it's still on the first page in the same forum this thread is... It contains all the relevant information you need to calculate the exact cost of any car imported into BC.

Yes I realize that it's going to cost me more than some of the other jdm vehicles I initially was thinking of. This is why I have some extra saved now so I can take care of some of the maintenance and upkeep once it lands. I appreciate the feedback and am having a look through your thread now.

I found a guy through a friend who has an r33 Gtst whose going to let me take it for a rip this weekend. I guess it'll give me a better idea as to what that body style feels like to drive. I found a good video on you tube showcasing the r32 GTR and I have to say that I'm so impressed with the technology of that car for its time. It's no wonder they're highly praised and saught after. I think if I were to own one I would really take the time to keep the vehicle up. I think the problem is that to many people get the hands on them and just want to bang on them. I guess that's the chance anyone takes importing one.

Just a thought but I don't care. If anyone wants to take shots at me for being a newb let them. We all have to start somewhere and that's why I've done some more research and am coming back because I'm not going to let a couple of members ruin my experience for being here. Clearly he's going to be on here anyway looking to stir the pot so seriously what does it matter? Guy wants to inflate himself because he knows his skylines then **** it he can have the attention.

With your budget, get a r33 gtst. Gtr is more and cost more to operate. If this is your first rwd car, the rb25 is plenty of power for you. Myself, I like the gtst more than the gtr and you can always get more power with mods if you want

R32's are going to need more work due to age and the gtr's price is gone thru the roof with the USA market opened up.

R34's are just more money in general cause they are newer and it seems like everyone is in love with r34's cause of the late mr walker's fast and the furious.

R33 is a happy medium and if you can get a spec 2 even better again. I have a 96 gtst and love it. It's my dd In the summer and all I do is put gas in it and change the oil.

What ever you get you'll be happy, you just gotta choose.

Well today I had the opportunity to take a rip in a 95 Gtst and have to say that it exceeded my expectations. The car felt a lot more nimble than I would've thought. I guess I thought that because the r33 is bigger that it would feel that way but I didn't find that to be the case. I was impressed with the way the car handled as well. Mind you the car had prety much brand new tires but it hugged the road beautifully. The seats were super comfy and there was a crap ton of room. Overall it was just a blast and the sound of the RB25 was nothing short of perfect. I think the sound of the engine and the twittering of the turbo was probably my favourite part. It's funny how these cars have there own characteristics. It's so much different than anything over been in. Although I didn't actually get to drive it I did a good sense of how the car felt. The car belongs to a guy who I met through a friend and I didn't want to ask. I could tell the car was his baby and didn't want to impose.

Anyways a super fun car that didn't disappoint. Now I can see why I hear a lot of people say that they use the gtrs out on the track and dd something else. I guess what it really comes down to is more moving parts equals a bit more knowledge and more maintenance.

I think I have a tendency to think I need the top model of every vehicle I own but I'm starting to get a better sense of the skyline and just how awesome they are. Definitely falling in love with these cars. The only thing that makes me apprehensive is getting parts but I've been hearing it's not bad once you get your sources dialled in.

Good to hear your catching the sky-fever lol. Parts are not bad, online you can get pretty much anything and a lot of other parts are the same on other model cars over here like the 300zx.

Oh I know the R34 is a thing of beauty. To be honest the more I look at these cars the more I want every gen.

The R32 is a very sleek dangerous sleeper. I saw 2 of them the other day when I was up in Edmonton and they're even nicer when you see them in person. Pics of R32s don't really do justice. There's something different about seeing one up close and personal.

The R33, dam I can't put my finger on it but this car has some serious longevity. It looks kinda like it doesn't quite fit but then you see it from a certain angle and you realize that this car is playing tricks on you. It's big and downright beautiful. It's the sorta car I wanna get in wearing a Nike Hoddie and tilt my hat. Ya.. it plays with your emotions but cause it's almost like dispute your efforts you'll never understand it fully.

The R34 looks like the kinda girl you would be banging if you were filthy rich. It's caviar and it's also a bat out of hell. It almost looks to good to be true. The two tone interior looks just perfect and the way the back fenders stick out is so fresh, just looking at it makes you dizzy.

I saw an R34 come up for sale yesterday on CL for 14k obo but the car looks a bit hacked IMO. I asked the guy some questions about the car but he wasn't even able to come up with an auction sheet and was playing prty dum. Probably a riced out R grade he bought for 7/8k and is just trying to flip it. I guess I won't really know but it doesn't look like the kinda buy I want to make. I'll continue to wait, as the seasons changing i suspect to see more and more come up.
