  • What would you do? A shop "borrows" your car...

Just got home from work over seas. Had left my car with a reputable shop to fix an alarm issue i was having.

I called the shop to get a progress report and see if i could pick it up today.

The guy i was dealing with informs me that he took my car to Calgary on a personal emergency (family member in hospital from accident) and put over 600kms on it. And he is sorry and doesnt want to lose his job over it.

He is a young kid. Obviously didnt realize what he was doing... but it was my Skyline GTR...

He has offered to replace my alarm with a top of a line unit with a starter kit.

But even so... i am still in shock. I dont want to press charges, nor do i want the kid to lose his job...

He offered something about $100 per 100 kms or something like that.

But money doesnt mean much. I also turned down the rev limit when i dropped the car off so they couldnt joy ride in it but they could still get to around 5000 rpm.

    Input please

Have him fired, report the shop to the BBB and demand restitution.

It wasn't 'borrowing', it was theft.

I would be pissed, and they shouldn't be surprised at the reaction. Cars of this nature are playthings, not appliances. If it was a sentra, I don't think they would make as many apologies and concessions as they seem to be. A shop should also have more than a few cars lying around, why would they shose a Skyline GTR to go on this emergency mission?

I call BS. Go back, collect the car, get everything they promised (upgraded alarm and cash per 100kms) but do not return for the alarm install or any more work in the future for that matter. I would also threaten to tell others of this incident or get the BBB involved if tey bitch or waffle over handing over the goods. A lot of time they will promise things and then install some used, refurbished or crap product knowing you will likely not bother checking the work done.

          Good luck!

I call B.S. There's busses, other family members, and like they said, who takes a GTR to a family emergency. Sounds like a couple of fun nights out with the guys :P Get the loot, maybe hold it over their heads and see what else they're willing to fork over for silence. I'd be screaming

Bet you really feel happy about limiting the revs to 5000rpm

thing is, who knows what he did, maybe he pushed it hard without warming her, maybe he pushed hard and didnt let her cool down before turning her off

Why did he take your car and not the "shop" car or hell his personnal car?

WOW....I feel violated just reading it. Take the car to another shop. Have a safety/buyers check done on the vehicle....make sure they inspect everything. Anything that is wrong with the car, the kid or the garage just paid for.
A "good" kid would never take someone elses car. Unfortunately, the type that would, are also the type to beat the crap out of your ride. :x

I agree...that is absolutley ridiculous....i would loose my mind if a shop did this to me.... there is no excuse to use your car...im sure the kid had other options.... have you gotten the car back??? Honestly, i would be furious and would for sure take legal action!!!..

Pretty much like everyone else has been saying. There's something REALLY fishy going on here. If you had a family emergency, would the first thing that popped into your head really be "Oh there's that GT-R down @ the shop there, I'll borrow it for the weekend and no one will mind". The kid is obviously half retarded if he thought this was a good idea. Im not even sure I'd get my alarm installed by a place that pulled this kind of stunt...If this is how they deal with customers, how good can their work possibly be? It definitely sounds like your car was a joyride for kid there for a couple days.

Hard to say what I'd do in this situation. Obviously you won't be going there anymore, and you DO deserve some sort of compensation for all this bs too.

Eeeek man, I'd be one unhappy camper if this happened to me. I'd be very reluctant to accept anything from these guys for this. I think taking the proper legal avenue is the right thing to do. This retarded kid needs to learn a lesson, that taking someones car for ANY reason, is not acceptable. If the shop really didn't know anything about this (which I doubt) then believe me, they would be firing this kid right away. Do you think they want to take chances like this with their business? I'd be taking the proper legal avenues on this one, if you don't I think you may end up regretting it in the end if this kid did something crappy to ur car. Im sure there were plenty of other cars available to him if this was truly an emergency, so I have a hard time believing his story. It was probably bombed around town at night to show his ricer friends or something.

Heres what the POLICE told me...

The police AS PER USUAL!!!!! can do nothing. They said that they "could possibly" charge him with "driving without permission" or something weak like that ONLY if there were witnesses??? BUT they would have to do a full investigation FIRST ofcourse.

Doesnt matter if he admits to it??? because it wasnt a cautionary statement?!
