  • explain AN and braided line making process please?

    hey,

sorry for the nubbish question im sure, but ive never done it before and would like to re-do my engine bay fuel lines using AN fittings and braided hoses... if someone wouldnt mind explaining the procedure for it.

I HAVE 3 QUESTIONS I NEED ANSWERED LOL...

i imagine it starts something like this:

measure the length of braided hose you need. cut it to length. that part i get lol...

    1) but what i mainly want to know is how you attach the AN fitting to the end of the hose such that it doesnt come loose? or leak!? is it glue? a pressure fitting? a hose clamp? how?!

    2) and then the next question is.. how do you decide what diamter hose you need, and what kind of fittings to get?

    3) simply is the - 8 AN bigger than a -4AN? is it reverse like electrical wiring where a zero guage is biggest? or what?

1.) I was told you tighten them until there's a fingernail gap between the two fittings.

Don't make the angles too much, nice flowing angles to avoid kinking the hose. Choose fitting angles (straight, 45, 90 degree) to make hose smooth flowing.

From what I undertand there are 2 types of fittings for braided hoses for oilcoolers, pushlock, swivel cutter fittings (to hose). Pushlock pushes over hose and has a locking nut (I think similar to a garden hose fitting) and is said to be reusable. Swivel cutter fitting cuts into hose and is permanent and fitting rotates 360 degrees with hoses if they move.

Better definition than mine is here -

2.) Depends on the fittings on sandwichplate, etc (oilcooler core can have 3 different AN sizes for say a 10row oilcooler), fuel line diameter, etc. It varies, depending on what your working on.

Here's an example of different oilooler sizes, AN fittings -

            it's very simple for sizing.

            for AN- lines,

            "1" = 1/16"

            therefore AN-4 = 1/4"

            AN-8 = 1/2"

            AN-16 = 1"

            so on, and on.

The fittings have a taper so that as you tighten, it squishes the inside to the walls, creating a very tight fit. You have to make sure that you install the female fitting properly on to the line first.

Get the earls prolite kelvar lines. So much easier to work with and looks awesome with black fittings.
