  • Cooling and airflow question

So my R32 GT-R has been running quite hot since day one - I commonly see water temps of 98-99 degrees, and on extremely hot days my rad fluid has boiled on occasion. This is bad. I installed a twin fan setup with a shroud, but the temps are still high. I'm thinking I need to get rid of the hot air that it swirling around my engine bay to help the fans do their job better. If I remove the undertray from under the motor, would that help or hinder the cooling? And what about a vented hood? Is it worth the money to buy one, or is the temp difference negligible?

you should try changing the thermostat on your car first, then/or get a coolant system flush. are you burning any white smoke? do yuou still have heat coming out of your heater vents?

When I go my car (straight off the boat),,, flushed enough dirt and crap out of the rad to plant about half an acre of corn... Use that CLR stuff,,, works like a charm.. (thx derk).

Rad has been flushed, No white smoke, and heater works just fine.

How cool are you wanting a twin turbo engine to be?? lol They make ALOT OF HEAT. The engine is designed to be ran at a certain temperature. Just cause its hot to human touch doesn't mean its too hot for the motor. I'm thinking if you're already running twin fan setup and your eng. temp gauge isn't much higher than 1/2-3/4 of the way up, then everything is operating just fine.

98 on regular days is too high, my car never goes above 70, 80 at the most on hot days with the ac on, and 95 at the most after 30 minute long racing sessions at Suzuka. Did you check your thermo?

My OEM sensor usually reads about 80deg during semi sprited driving, according to my datascan software. that is way too hot. Put thermo in boiling water and see if it opens

Nismo thermo has now been ordered. We'll see if it helps. Back to the original question; would removing the undertray help at all?

No, RB's are not air cooled engines. The majority of cooling is done by coolant and a little by oil. The amount of surface area and airflow is negligble... don't waste your time.

those shrouds for the electronic fan setup sit right against the rad do they not ??
you would think that's reducing the surface area of the radiator exposed to cool air, therefore reducing it's cooling capabilities ????

I am missing my shroud and I have the stock clutch fan.. it runs fine except when sitting in traffic. getting a shroud welded up, (that sits over the rad, like a box thingy)

I don't intend to use the extra airflow to cool the block - I know that's unreasonable, but more to just evacuate the hot air from the engine bay so that the fans are more effective. Because the rad uses the air around it as a heat exchanger, the fans are supposed to reomve the hot air from around the rad. If there is a build up of hot air around the rad and fans, then they won't be as effiecient. If the hot air is removed, then the fans can pull more cool air to help the rad do it's job.

At least that's my theory - feel free to poke holes in it

fans are supposed to pull the cool air from the outside of the rad through it... cooling the coolant flowing through it....

You said you flushed the radiator do you mean just the radiator or from the heater hose in the front firewall?
Did you bleed the radiator properlly?
                            Is there coolant leaks?
                            Does the car idle fine?

Check amperage on the fans to see if they are drawing enough for their designs.
