  • timing belt whine...

So I get my r32 gtr up and running and I hear a faint supercharger whine noise coming from the front of the engine, after narrowing it down I find its the sound of the timing belt. I have replaced everything on his motor, it is fresh with all new oil pump, timing belt, tensioner, spring, idler pulley, idler bolt. My question is we have went through a couple of times and cant totally eliminate the sound, I have set it a few different ways. 1 being extremely tight which caused the noise to be loud, now I have made it a little quieter but it is still there. I searched around and found that some people say it tends to be common with kevlar belts (I have a Power Eneterprise kevlar belt) also some people say it is also common with cam gears that are worn (I have a set of older Tomei cam gears). Lastly I have read that the belts tend to quiet down after you get some miles on it. Can some one put me to ease with similar situations?

is the noise very loud (like a screeching sound) and constant?? In my car i had a loud whine every time i would start the car...i later found out it was my alternator belt...i made it tighter and the noise was gone. IF not then...no idea could be kevlar belt.

is not a drive belt they are off, I eliminated that problem, its mor elike a faint supercharger sound. The motor has been together for a few months now and Ithe car has been a huge restoration and mod ordeal and is my first rb series car. I am hoping once on the road it goeas away after some time for it to wear in.

i think it just needs to wear in a but drive it for a bit if it still makes that noise then go mad and try to find the problem

My timing belt whined (rpm dependent) when it was too tight.

so how loose does it need to be then? it basically has no tention on it now, just enough to be able to twist the belt a quarter-half twist... The tensioner is set at about 5:30

You should be able to move that belt half an inch to an inch up and down between the cam gears.

you mean between the cam gears up top I should be able to twist it a half inch or physically pull it up a half inch?

Right between the cam gears up top (you'll have to take the top cover off) just push down with one finger (or maybe two) on the belt and see how much up and down play you have. SHould not be zinging tight.

Im actaually at this stage of putting my timing belt back on. So basicly there isnt a set torque to have it set? Basicly by feel? I have the service manual and it doesnt even say.
Traction is optional, so are zipties

OMG this is the same problem i am having on my build. Got it back together last night and started it and same thing, it sounds like a supercharger. My belt is really tight and i am going to try to loosen it a bit. I got my belt, tensioner and spring and idler off nismoparts.com. If it still wines , i might try my old tensioner that is still in good shape. I ran the car for about 20min to seat the piston rings and it didn't go away. I first thought it was my water pump but it is brand new.
