  • FMIC with stock turbo.........any benefit?

i understand the advantages of having an FMIC on your car, but does it really offer any performance gains on a stock turbo running factory boost? it seems theres mixed opinions on this. has anyone installed an FMIC on a stock/mildly modified car and noticed a difference?

Do you have a GTS or GTR?

From what I understand the FMIC doesn't really offer any performance gains on its own. It's more a supporting mod to allow other mods to be run safer.

I have a lightly modified GTS-t and the 3rd mod I put on was a exotic speed FMIC. The reason being is I turned my boost up to 1bar so I had the FMIC first to make it a safer mod in the end, from the suggestion of the techs at ztune.

Nfi if it offers any benefit for stock boost but look at it this way, cut your bumper and it looks neat at least!
      Sideways is the best ways.

Can gain 1.5psi more boost (less restrictive, more air reaching engine) and up to 20rwkw (27rwhp) with FMIC. But it depends on how good the intercooler is. Tube N fin are the best at cooling, producing hp. Most cheap intercoolers are bar N plate and heat soak easily and are restrictive.

This is fitting a HDI intercooler (tube N fin) on R33 and notice the 17rwkw (23rwhp) gain on dyno (more air entering engine with same amount of fuel injected = more hp). Factory runs engine rich and leaning A/F (Air / Fuel) ratio out with rise in boost level = more hp -

Ignition DVD goes to HDI to have a new front mounted intercooler fitted to the R33 budget build up car.

But if intercooler is not sized correctly (too big) to turbo, can go backwards in performance on 1/4 mile. Fit a turbo to match intercooler, 1/4 mile time drops.

After fitting intercooler it's good idea to get engine retuned. Nistune for stock ECU allows you to do this. From what I understand, the main benefit of FMIC is it keeps intake temps cooler and combustion cooler and more stable in engine, so can run more ignition timing, produce more hp. When intake temps rise, have to pull ignition timing back and hp drops.

Going front mount provides cooler air being right in the front of the car and large serfice area. Cooler air = more power. When i did it to my car i noticed a huge gain.

Skym, With sizing is there a chart you can provide. I"m running a 3" thick core on my rb25 with a holset turbo making 400whp. I am planning a motor rebuild to get me closer to 500+ wheel hp. Is it worthwhile going to a 4" core?

          Thanks Brian

As far as I know, the longer the intercooler core is or amount of bars in height, tube design, the better a intercooler is at cooling. Height, width, tube design is how good a intercooler flows.

From what I understand, intercooler cores are rated in CFM at certain psi. You get a compressor map for turbo and match that CFM at certain psi (desired psi you want to run) that you work out on compressor map to intercooler core. Then find a intercooler core with size, CFM at certain psi to fit your application (front mount, sidemount, etc). Also from what I understand, you want around 1.0-1.5psi pressure drop, as you need to keep air inside intercooler long enough to get cooled.

There's a company in USA (makes custom intercoolers for competition use, etc) that list's size of core vs CFM on website, Bell intercoolers -

For example with 3.5" thick core -
