  • Do the spring kit have to match with the same company's camshaft ?

I found a clearance set of apexi valve spring V-MAX kit. Just wondering if I can buy them and buy a set of tomei type-B or I will have to buy a set of apexi camshaft?

    Thanks

If they are designed for use on the rb26 they will work but it's not necessary to upgrade any valve components when using type b poncams they are a drop in cam with no Mods needed

This is what I heard but I know mitch have type B and he still had to do the valve and shim and I also read others build who did the same.. Dunno. I rather just be safe for an extra 300$ and swap them.

Well there is no need to change them unless you want new ones just to be "safe" as you say but you do not need them with the poncams.I'm running the type b's without changed springs.Invest that 300$ somewhere else.

I'M not sure but I think Mitch had to do a rebuilt on his motor because he used oem spring the first time he went on the dyno.

I'm just saying, look around the web and you'll see poncams are drop in cams.

You only need as stiff valve springs as you need as the cams need. Any stiffer and your wearing your head faster and sucking up a little HP. If type b cams call for stock springs that's all you need.

Ferrea are the best bang for buck I think. Cheaper than tomei. Also, if someone is on a budget for power, an RB26 can get 500whp on a stock head with -5s and 91 pump gas Don't replace what is in good condition unless everything else can support what you're trying to do.

From what I understand, Poncams are like regrounded stock cams (some weld lobes to add metal to tip of lobe that increases lift, regrind tip. Then regrind base circle or round part of lobes to increase duration), but Tomei use new blanks instead of factory camshaft's, so it's one piece of metal. Regrounded stock cams work with stock valvesprings and are way cheaper to do (around half the cost of new cams). From what I understand, that's why Tomei cams look like stock cams with notches for removing headstuds and work with stock camgears.

The thing you have to take into account is stock cams are bedded in with the stock lifters. Once you change cams, your meant to change to new lifters, new valve springs, especially in race applications. Then use a break in procedure that cam manufacturers give you. It's got something to do with valvetrain longevity.

Here's the break in procedure from Kelford -
