  • HKS DLI with new coils?

First, by reading some reviews on the web, it seems like there's better ignition amplifier than the HKS. People find it weird that the HKS unit is like 40% smaller than any other amplifiers on the market.

Second, is it more a band-aid or really an improvement part? I bought a set of brand new OEM coilpack. On a local forum, someone is selling the DLI unit for 200$ with least than 1000 km on it ( almost brand new). Will it help my brand new coils or it's totally useless?

and do you really need a F-CON in order to use the DLI?

    Thanks!

The DLI is a good upgrade for any coils that do not have built in amplifiers. The OEM coils have been known to handle 800hp. The HKS DLI does not need an F-con to run it, you just need to hack up your harness and wire it in. A new DLI with harness runs around $500USD so $200 is a good price but with your power levels, I don't see it making too much of a difference. If you can in fact get a DLI with a harness for $200, then do it, otherwise, IMO you wouldn't need if you were looking for a brand new one as you would benefit better elsewhere with that cash

Why would it be a bandaid? Unless you mean a bandaid for crappy pump gas instead of race gas lol.

You can buy the harness seperate from hks. It is an awesome unit and for 200 I would jump on it. If you don't buy it let me know where it is so I can jump on it.

From what I understand, factory runs the coilpacks with lower voltage (dwell) for longevity. Can play with dwell settings on ECU to increase the voltage. But gapping sparkplugs down to 0.8mm, so less gap to jump will be better than increasing power of coilpacks to jump the bigger gap. DLI should only be used when coilpacks can't provide enough voltage to stop spark from getting blown out.

I'm saying it might be a band-aid to 20yr old coils because HKS says to not use with aftermarket system and should only be used with OEM. So, I figured maybe it's only good to fix OEM coils from being not as performant as aftermarket.

New coils + this DLI will cost me about 60$ than new yellowjacket. I hope I'm making a smart move here.

If you have brand new OEM coils I don't see you needing an ignition amplifier. The HKS dli's don't like moisture, they seem to fail randomly sometimes.

Buy a kenne bell boost-a-spark, $230 or so.

Just saying your not running high enough boost levels to need it.

But if you want a system like that, can run a Kenne Belle Boost A Spark (mentioned in above post) -

WTF? I can't belive I would see a 50whp gain with that thing lol.

Right now, I'm at 17psi but I plan to hit 23-25 with my water-meth kit.

You're right. You won't see 50whp gain with it. Maybe 8whp.
