  • Oil Pressure

When I'm driving like a normal person and not boosting like i got the Taco Bell Shitts and have to get home my oil pressure stays around 2-3 but when i start messing around and come to a stop at a light for example the oil pressure drops to just about 0 . I'm thinking that the problem might be the oil that is to thin because i have 5w-30 in it now. Should i get some 5w-40 or 5W-50 or may the problem be more then just and oil change?

Thanks in advance for the help.

no, the oem sensor just sucks.

Get an aftermarket one to be safe.

Stock oil pressure gauge does that when sender is stuffed. It's a common problem when sender gets older.

Another way to check oil pressure is to put trans in neutral and rev the engine, as funny enough, sender works properly when you do that.

Oil viscousity is based on oil temp and 10w40 is good for short periods at 100-120 degrees celcius. On racetrack w50 if at 100-120 degrees celcius for long periods. Use 5w instead of 10w for cold start if in cold conditions (snow, etc).

I find the 10W40 gives 1 at idle on factory oilpressure gauge (factory figure for RB20DET) and is consistant. Also engine is very smooth at idle, lifters are quieter, engine is more responsive. The 10W60 I ran before was around 1-2 and would fluctuate between them. Lesson learnt is to check oil temps, oil pressure and choose the correct oil to suit your cars engine. Of course you need gauges to do this.

On the same topic; anyone know if the oem pressure sender relays any vital information to the ecu? Otherwise, id like to ditch it and run my A/M sender in its place to clean up the filter relocation - since these senders are such an eyesore.

As far as I know, it goes to stock oil pressure gauge only. You do remove stock sender and fit a aftermarket oil pressure sender, gauge when checking oil pressure.

It doesn't send any vital info to the ecu...

for those wondering theres actually a LOT of useless stuff that you can toss out the ECU doesn't use. as long as you have aftermarket gauges to keep yourself informed, you could theoretically bin the following

oem: boost sensor, oil temp, oil pressure

^ I've always read people saying the OEM boost sensor on the firewall does send info to the ECU?

I personally dont know, just what people on different boards said.

That square box (MAP sensor on firewall) is for stock boost gauge only. There's no wires going to ECU plug from MAP sensor on firewall. Same with sender on block for stock oil pressure gauge.

Only time a MAP sensor goes to ECU is on a aftermarket ECU that runs a MAP sensor.

Also some aftermarket boost gauges (electronic version) use a aftermarket MAP sensor.

I don't see these items being really heavy or even that bad for viewers, why do you guys want to get rid of these items so bad. I know the temp sensor and the oil pressure sensor doesn't work worth a shiit so I would ditch those but anything above and beyond that I personally wouldn't bother removing.

Oh and from experience my a/m gauge has been a big help! My oil pressure on stock gauge didn't read anything and my apexi one read in between 1.25-2 so there is a big difference there
Miss driving sooooo bad! Need to get a car on the road ASAP!
