  • Air release vent

Today I opened up the air release bleed screw to check if there was any airto be bled from my coolant system, and discovered a problem. No air OR coolant came out. I could not feel or hear any air coming coming out, and it is too small with a tight bend to get much in to clean with, but I was able to get a little bit of junk out, a brown pasty substance. The coolant itself looks clean, I drained a little bit. Any tips on cleaning the vent, or should I just take it in and get a complete flush to try and clean it out?

    Thanks!

I am definitely interested in hearing ways people do this as well.
Miss driving sooooo bad! Need to get a car on the road ASAP!

You removed the screw with the engine running right? Just making sure.

Yup, revved the engine a bit too and let it run for a while to make sure it was circulating.

Where is this vent? Is that the plug on the lower passenger side of the block?

It's at the top of the motor by the fuel rail.

Putting an air gun on it may be able to get the job done?

I'd just make sure not to go all out at first and maybe have the rad cap off so the pressure can exit the system (although the rad cap should open when pressure becomes too high).

Already tried, no go. Seems to be really plugged.

Pretty sure it is, can't hear it opening tho. Have the heater in the car going too when i do it.

You won't hear it open, you may notice a slight drop in temp and your cooling fan should kick in when it does open. You should also see the coolant flowing through the top of the rad when you manually hold the throttle plate open and bump up the revs.

One thing I did on my old R32 was to run a couple bottles of cooling system flush through it and man, it made a huge difference. Especially if the previous owner ran mostly water in the system you could be looking at some dirt build up or possibly rust(cast iron block).

Lemme know how ya make out Colin and I can always swing by and give ya a hand.

I just recently flushed my coolant and I can tell you that the coolant flowed out the air drain plug like a fountain even with the thermostat closed. I would think it should flow more with the thermostat closed since the coolant is taking the easy way out?
