  • Proper way to activate fuel pump with engine off to drain tank?

Howdy folks, the gasoline in my GTS-T's gas tank is a couple years old, so I want to remove it all and put fresh gas in before starting up the rebuilt engine. I was planning on activating the fuel pump to run and pump all the old gas out into a jerry can via the fuel line in the engine bay that comes off the fuel filter. couple questions about doing this safely.

1- can I just pull the fuel pump relay and jump the 2 pins that connect to activate the pump to get the fuel pump running? will this run it nonstop?
2- is it safe/ok for the fuel pump to do this for the length of time it would take to drain half a tank of gas? could I do it in a couple spurts instead?

I stuck a hose down my filler pipe and created a gravity feed. Make sure to not overfill the can. Lifting the can higher then the tank stops the gravity.

To create one, stick the hose into the fuel tank down the filler. Put the other end below the gas tank and suck the air out of the hose, as fuel is about to reach the end, shove it in the can and viola, self running pump without any power. I used a hose with a small hand pump in the middle for siphoning to get the air out.

Your fuel pump wont have any problem running for the time it takes to drain the tank. I removed my fuel pump relay ages ago and have had no problems daily driving it.

I like the suction pipe idea, wont pump any old crud into the filter or pump. Ill try that first.

If you use your pump to get all the fuel out it will get hot. becouse it's empty....full tank keeps the fuel pump cool

use a clear hose and there will be no surprize for you.
