  • If you have to remove your tranny, what would you do while you there?

Mine is making a weird sound. It was rebuilt 3000kms ago I did maybe 10 launch in this timespan. so the rebuilt job was poorly done. Anyways, so what should I do ?

Option 1) Just do like some, each time it break buy another one at 400$ and wish it hold a season ?

Option 2) Buy a rebuilt 300zx synchro kit ( 300$), swap for a nismo pivot ball, is there anything else to be rebuilt in these tranny? and wish it will act like a brand new transmission for the next 5 years ?

    Thanks for your advice.

For the reccord, the car does the 1/4 in 11 sec but see the drag strip maybe 10-20x a season. Pretty much a street daily car.

Can you be more specific on the weird noise please ? isit a metal on metal noise or a bearing noise ? broken clutch plates ?

What was involved in the rebuild ?

I was told it was a loose bearing maybe. but to me it doesnt matter.. I still have to pay someone to have it remove and put it back.

I drove the car for 2 months with that sound so it must not be a major issue. What it does is let say I'm at low idle ( -1500rpm) my car will start to rumble. IF I PRESS on the clutch pedal, the sound goes off and the car rumble just like any 20yr old jdm with cams does lol.

If I drive at 3000rpm I don't hear anything or feel anything. It's mostly at red light, I have to press the clutch in or else you think the car will fall apart.

as for the rebuilt.. there's like 800 $ of labor + the usual tax.. they charge me 300$ for 2 and 3 synchro, didn't change the other, I have a nismo pivot ball in it ( well I hope it's there and they didn't steal it.. cuz I don't recall seeing the OEM 20yr pivot ball), input shaft, couple of small bearing and stuff priced a 3-5$ and the reverse spring as they call it. That is on top of my head.

          How old is your clutch?

if you haven't replaced your clutch yet, and you have to take the tranny off, do your clutch at the same time. a Clutch job is 95% removing the tranny 5% swapping the clutch.

your description sounds like a throwout bearing. Was the pilot bearing changed? I assume you know twin plates rattle.

well the nismo pivot ball priced at 50$ was changed.. the bearing I dont know? I've drove this twin plate clutch for 5000kms, I know the sound and feel of it but it's to a whole new level now.

I also changed the line to braided lines.

If it was me and had a backup ride (the skyline not been the daily) I would pull the tranny? clutch flywheel off before I ordered parts to see what I was dealing with.

Also doing it myself to keep costs down, but if your paying someone else to do it, Might aswell get a pilot bearing if it wasnt changed when your twin was installed. If ya can afford it maybe the rebuild isnt a bad choice.
Traction is optional, so are zipties

I used to do stuff myself and I always had to redo it. So I learn my lesson, if you cant do it right the first time, let someone else do it.

So yeah.. labour kill me.. Trying to find a good guy locally who could make me a sweet deal but I don,t know if I will find him.
