  • Starter clicking? **URGENT**

So, I've never really noticed this much. It'd happen about once every 1-2 weeks after sitting a while. Basically, as I turn the engine over and the starter turns over the engine it makes a "clicking" sound.

So I've come to the conclusion my bendix (I may be wrong on that one) is either not connecting with the gears properly.

It doesn't always do this, could someone give me insight on this issue?

***CAR DOES TURN ON WHEN IT CLICK***
    BATTERY IS NOT DEAD

Also, I'm looking for compatible engine models that will have the same starter that I can use for this. I've searched on ebay and found some for about 200, hoping to get one cheaper in a usdm car.

If no compatible models, does anyone have a starter for sale?

    Cheers!

Low batterie or alternator not charging or solenoid dead (starter). Have it rebuild if the casing/bearing is not pooched. A starter is a good investment.

I have been having alternator issues, but how is that related to my starter clicking?

typically when it clicks I won't start the engine, soon as I hear the click I let off the starter and try again. (Typically it doesn't do it again)

It isn't a fast ticking though, it's a slower click. ( I know what a low battery start sounds like )

sometimes binding in the starter from a catching brush or a poor connection in the stator or armature can cause the clicking. If your mechanically inclined enough to rebuild a starter its not very difficult or time consuming. Check your powers, grounds and voltage drops when cranking to rule out surrounding electrical.

I think with binding, the trick is to lightly tap on starter with rubber? or metal? hammer and then see if starter works. If that trick doesn't work and battery, etc (as mentioned above) is ok, rebuild starter. If engine has done over 100,000km, starter, alternator, powersteering pump need to be rebuilt as part of routine maintenance. Auto sparky (auto electrician) can rebuild starter and usually know where to get the rebuild kits.

Car only has 88k on it, but the clicking hasn't happened at all in the last 3 days. Video taped me turning my car on to see if I could get a sound to show you guys, but it started as if nothing was wrong.

Thank you for the reply guys. I'll end up getting it rebuilt on a weekend or week I don't have classes.

Also, looking to buy an alternator and a starter still! Pm me if you know someone/have either.
