can you work on the crank bearings without taking out the engine, im trying to find the cheapest way to replace the bearings

  • #2
There is no cheap way , you cant just replace the bearings without doing other work. you'll need to Remove the engine and dismantle it , inspect the bottom end and probably have the crank reground , new bearings , resize the rods , linebore/hone the main bearing girdle etc .

If you are trying to do it cheap you cant , its a skyline motor , do it once and do it right , if you don't you might just aswell set fire to the cash your about to spend and then do it all over after a short period of time anyway.

If you dont have the cash to redress the engine properly then just buy a good used engine either on here or from a reputable JDM dealer .what has happened to the motor that you need to do this ?

I know this sounds a bit harsh but it's reality

There is a reason that it spun a bearing , probably an oiling issue - whats your budget ? and how much work can you do yorself ?

I would suggest you might be able to do it for close to that price. Replace the crank and rod bearings, get the crank checked/polished, get a gasket kit and studs, replace the rings, check the pistons, have the cylinders honed and do the disassembly and assembly yourself. Make sure you have a proper, calibrated torque wrench and do your homework.
The problem is all the things you SHOULD do while you're there ie. timing belt, water pump, and idlers...

Hmm you are going to be hard pressed to do that for $1500 - just had a block line honed , New crank balanced , rods resized , over bored , decked , hot tanked and fluxed to make sure it wasnt cracked and with taxes that would take care of most of that cash without a bearing set or anything else that will probably be needed .

I'd look for a good long block and just swap .
