Opinions please on purchase (spun bearing)

Hello guys, so im looking at a GTR for sale here locally. I'll describe the car first, the owner told me its stroked and bore to 2.8L, has forged diamond internals, cometic head gasket, ARP bolt, ported head, twin top mounts manifold, 650CC injectors, twin fuel pumps, clutch, intercooler, n1 oil pump, greddy timing belt etc.. he tells me it is pushing 600HP and tuned for 94octane fuel.

He wants to sell me the car because he tells me that few months ago he put some lower octane fuel and left it in the tank for a few months and when he retook the car the old fuel was still in the tank and he spun a rod bearing on the car.

My question is does it seem credible that he would spin the bearing just because of the fuel used? he is willing to install new bearings on the engine but do you think it would of damaged more then just the bearings? He is selling it for a fair price but I want you guy's opinion first. thanks

Meh sounds kind of fishy. I mean anyone who would build a twin top mount 600hp gtr isnt going to accidentally put low grade fuel in forget about it and then rape on it when bad gas. In theory the lower grade gas could cause the car to lean out and cause detonation but that would be more likely to blow a piston/ring over a bearing. Bearings usually spin because of oil starvation.

Go along with it and tell him you want to have it checked out by one of the garages in the sponsors section. Have them do an inspection and tell you what is actually wrong / potentially save you $$$. Until then you have no clue (other than what the current owner is selling/saying.) Professional inspection prior to making the deal is really the only way you can make an informed decision concerning the purchase. GL.

Edit. Location is Q on your info - Quebec - Perry Auto Performance in Laval is good, also there are a couple of good garages in Ottawa if you're in Gatineau.

Thanks guys, the guy owns a performance shop here. I havent seen the car yet because its quite a drive from here but i'm definitly going now as the guy seems credible and it would come out to a good deal if I can get the story right. I'll go see it in person and question him on that,

Just for the record you dont just install a new set of bearings without removing and machining the crank , resizing the rods and building it properly . Then you have to find out why it spun , patially blocked oil journal maybe ? 91 octant fuel wont make it do this as gtrjohn sayes.

I would factor in what ever you pay for the car plus a rebuilt bottom end for your budget, i dont trust his bearing replacement will run long enough for you to have any fun with it.

And the fact he owns a performance shop means nothing , i know of a so called performance shop locally that tried to port match headers to 350 chev heads with the motor in place and a shop vac stuffed in the port to "catch" the particles of metal ...

True dat however I had a buddy do a similar thing and the predetonation hammered out a rod bearing, maybe crushed it, I dunno but it spun. It wasn't bad fuel though, was just fuel starvation around a corner (stock fuel tank below 1/3)
