  • Oil Strainer gasket or O-ring ?

The nissan fast page shows a gasket , the engine manual shows an o-ring , which is correct ?

Also - if using an HKS oil cooler kit is there any real need to continue to use the water/oil heat exchange unit on the side of the block ?

I'm assuming this is to not only help cool the oil - but to help warm up the oil when first started ? Has anyone done away with this for a cleaner install ?

It's for warming the oil up; and yes it has been done away with. I believe a stock RB20 oil filter block is the easiest replacement. Or you can get an adapter stud that screws into the engine block and lets you install the filter or relocation kit directly onto the engine block. Apparently you would need a filter with a relief valve if you eliminate this oil block.

To the original poster I replaced my strainer pickup seal with an o-ring not a gasket.

I've deleted mine and I now use an rb20 filter block with a greddy t-stat block adapter for the oil cooler. Can you elaborate on this "filter with relief valve" please. I'm just breaking in so I'm using fram filters. But soon I'll be switching to KN filters.

      Cheers,
      Brent.

Thanks Brent , ill pull it back off and use an o-ring then , the gasket kit comes with both , i dont see machining to retain the o-ring through - curious lol

From my limited research, people switching to the RB20 filter block use a filter with an internal reflief/bypass valve, for use in the event that the filter is plugged. I suspect the RB26 has an internal relief valve within it.
