  • R32 randomly wont start

So I've had this problem ever since i got my car a year ago and I'm worried its going to leave my stranded one day. Randomly when I try to start the car in the mornings or right after a shut down it wont even crank. (fuel pump primes, lights on dash come on) then ill take the key out and let it sit for 10 seconds and ill put the key in let the pump prime then it'll either start or it wont. sometimes it takes 5 or 6 tries before it decides to crank and fire up. Just to be clear when the starter does decide to crank, the car fires up right away.

it did this with the old stock rb20 and it still does it with the new rb25. (using the old rb20 loom and ecu).
my battery is in the truck because i don't have room in the usual spot, 6 gauge wire and ground is good. (brand new battery)

any ideas of where to look for loose connections or anything like that? or whats causing this?

I had same problem was the starter, only two times it actually wouldnt start, was in or just outside my garage.I just changed it a few nights ago, was not fun on a rb26,but seems good now, starter I put on was way bigger than the one I took off, maybe it was off a rb20,

I use to have this problem, After replacing my alternator with one off a quest the problem was solved. Have you tried testing your alternator?

It sounds like your starter man. Old celica did that. And it was the starter.next time it does it WACK it with a hammer and see if it starts. First check the batter connections. Then do a starter draw test. Hook up a volt meter with an amp clamp and but the amp clamp on the power wire to the starter with the arrow facing the starter. Pull the fuel pump fuse. And crank the car if the battery falls below 9 volts you need a new starter or your battery is crap. But a battery test will confirm that.

hmm it makes sense that it could be the starter because i reused the same one when i did my engine swap. all battery connections are solid.

Chances of the ecu acting up intermittently like that are slim. Usually a ecu goes out with a bang. And now that you said you used the old starter, im almost 100% sure thats what it is

Does anyone know if you can rebuild these starters? Or has an oem part number for a new one, I got a friend that works on Nissan so I get good deals

I would say starter to, there is a dead spot on the comm. Next time it does not start put the car in gear and push it a bit to get off the bad part of commutator.

You can take it to a rebuild shop, they will clean up the commutator, put new brushes, sometimes bearings and then bench test it. I had a intermittent slow cranking on my car, I rebuilt it myself and found the brushes were done.
