  • Engine oil not good after storage???

Hey guys. My r32 gtr is parked for the winter and i've heard from some ppl at work that i have to change the oil again once it comes back to life in the spring. Apparently the oil will break down and separate, even in the cold. Does anyone know if this is true? I know gasoline will do something similar to that, but oil??? Thanks

Sometimes moisture can collect in the engine or oilpan and that could potentially foul the oil.

Good practice to start the season with a nice fresh oil.

This is a subject that will likely produce much debate.
Did you change it when you put it up? Do you start it routinely throughout the off season? (Not recommended by most)
I know some people who will drain syn. oil and replace it with dino oil for the winter replacing it again with syn in the spring.

Thats interesting. I probably have 3000km's left on the oil, so i really don't want to change it.....unless i have to. Royal Purple isin't cheap. No i've only started it once, but i try not to because of the cold.

Cold storage is not good for oil, especially mineral based, as waxes can form permanently. You would have also settling of additives during hot/cold cycling after long term storage. Always store the oil as per the manufacturers recommendations.

Hey, I've synthetic oil and my gtr's stored in a heated sub-basement parking lot. Will I need to change the oil in spring? I made like 1000 Km on this oil before storage....

From what I understand from bobbo, starting the car routinely isn't good? I've always thought it was better to start it several times during the cold season...

Idling your engine from a cold start and turning it off several times over storage will do more harm than good. Oil viscosity is much higher at ambient conditions than at operating temperatures. Also, your engine passages are initially devoid of oil at the beginning of the starting process. More wear occurs as a result. It is much better to just leave it alone if you will not be using it, taking the necessary storage precautions. You should still change the oil after storage, as per reasons mentioned before.

I could see it being a good thing to start it occasionally since that the oil sitting in the base of the engine isn't protecting any of the seals and they will dry out (mainly valve stem seals) but others do apply. Rubber do crack up when it's dryed out

Well there is a reason cylinder fogging oil exists afterall. Cylinder walls and rings are awfully dry on cold starts after extended resting periods. Though, I personally don't use fogging oil because it's an unnecessary hassle and it's only the first dry start that's hard until everything gets lubed up again.

I put some Lucas oil stabilizer in before I put my car under for the winter. Problem is I have my car in a storage facility pretty far from anywhere I could change my oil, so I may have to drive it a little bit before I drop the old fluids.

I have done that over months with stock exhaust and the exhaust rust's from inside out (due to condensation that needs to be burnt off by driving car), but apart from that engine ran ok. I would think engine needs to be run for longer, as when around half way on stock coolant temp gauge it only reaches 55 degrees or so on ECU (I have tested it, as was curious).

I left car for I think was 6 months (fairly warm conditions) and it was hard to start (need a battery booster), but started with old oil first (could be rust on bores, etc that gets into oil) and then changed oil, filter. Engine has run fine since then.

Well after hearing all of this, which i appreciate by the way, i think i'll play it safe and just change the oil and filter. I just love my skyline too much. Regardless of the cost. I'm sure most of you would agree with me. It sucks that the oil hasn't been used fully, but its better to be safe than sorry.....even if the problem i'm trying to avoid may come years and years from now. I hope my RB26 lives forever.

I've owned may cars and some of em had so little KMs that they'd get oil change intervals as far apart as a few years. After 20 years, they still ran minty, no leaks and has good comp tests. For example, my gtr has a 13L oil capacity and has seen 4300kms in almost 5 years. That's a lot of oil changes if I did it every spring and fall.

Don't you n1 pumps, they exploded.
Don't use 2 fuel pumps, you'll exploded your engine without knowing.
Don't use AEM ecus, they're garbage.
Don't make big power on your stock block, it'll crack.
Do upgrade your front diff or itll take out your engine when you launch.

Dealerships and alot of mechanics say to change oil every 6 months even if u have only 1000km on the oil. now if its true or a money scam who knows if your really worried drain a little bit out and get the oil tested before u dump it out.

Nissan dealership I talked to recommended every 3 months or 5000kms, which ever is first for turbocharged engines for oil, filter change. My cars oil, filter is changed nearly every 1000-2000kms or so every 3 months. NA engines you can leave for 10,000kms.
