  • Dash Bubble (I know)

Hey guys, im turning to you as I seem to get most my answers to life from this site. I have a dash bubble as so many of us have and i want it gone. I know the heat method, i know the injection method, but realistically i know both of these do not work 100% and are ideas moreso than practice. I have phoned a number of upholstery repair places only to hear that they cant fix it. Im wondering if anyone know if this actual CAN be fixed at all (by a professional)? or if im after a lost cause and need to find a good used one or fork out the $800 for a new one *cringe*

I personally used the syringe, heat and super glue method and but worked. I need to spend more time on mine but it's done good so far.

I noticed upholsters use steam to make the material mouldable and then use glue to stick it to the foam. The main cause of the bubble is using silicon based product's on dash (only use water, rag or basically a damp cloth to wipe dash) that breaks down the glue, etc (sun adds to the problem) and that is still present in the foam hence the glue failure again.

A upholster I talked to said screw some thin trim over it with screws to fix it, another said to recover the dash (remove the old foam, etc and explained the glue failure problem). If want a flocked looking dash (better than stock dash that reflect's into front window and makes it harder to see on a sunny day), might be easier to retrim the dash.

well i got one last place to go hauling around this dash. After that i'll try the superglue method and drill a hole through the back.

I fixed my old bubble with heat, gorilla glue in a syringe and a a small piece of 2x4 to push even pressure on it for like 45 min. It sucked to sit there but it looked factory after.

I tried that heat-and-glue-fix with mine. It worked great and looked beautiful.....until it was parked outside for a couple days in the sun + 80-90 deg temps we had here for a couple weeks. (It's usually garaged ALL the time...)
The very day after that it started to return.
I have a couple bubbles in mine so I just ended up getting a mint used one with no bubbles, that also looks like it's never been armor-all'd so thats a plus. Just have to install it now.

Comparitively, $800 doesn't sound that bad, as I was quoted $1200 for a new one. Still a lot of coin though. I paid $200 for my used one but as you know, finding one is the hard part.

Edit** Any upholstery place I went to also said they couldn't fix it either.

Update: the heat gun, drilling three holes from behind and injecting gorilla glue worked flawlessly! Thanks guys for the ideas! I'll post a tutorial when I get a chance for other bubble dash sufferers
