  • R32 GTR project in Ottawa - what should I do?

    Hey guys,
TL;DR My basic question is that I have an R32 GTR that I don't know what to do with. Sell as a project, sell in pieces, rebuild myself, or bring it to a shop.

I'm asking for opinions. There's some back story here so read on if you want the full spiel.

I bought an R32 GTR in 2009 and I loved it. Really active in the forums and put together a few events (Ottawa Skymeet 2009). After owning the car for only 3 months I spun a bearing. This is a month after installing a pair of Garrett 2860-5s. So I sourced a new engine, but it was modified for external sump. I bought it from a friend who had a 240z from the 70s with an RB26 in it. He wanted more power and bought a fully built RB26. I pulled out the old motor over the winter in 2009. I bought so many brand new parts for it that are still boxed.

Then I moved to Australia. I bought an R34GTT when I was there and absolutely had a blast. The GTR meanwhile sat in my garage until I moved out, then I put the car and all the parts in a storage locker. So the car has been sitting there for 2 years.

The truth of the matter is that I don't have the time, skills, or a workshop to put it back together myself as my new place doesn't have a garage. I don't know any reputable shops or people in Ottawa that would help / put it back together for me. When I open the locker to check on the car it just makes me so sad that it's sitting there and getting no love.

What should I do? Is there a good shop in Ottawa that can work on this project for me? Should I find someone on the forums, kijiji-ebay looking for a project? Should I sell the shell (it's in great condition, absolutely no rust and no track time), the motor, and all my extra boxed parts?

If you can (and are still interested in the car/ Hobby) I'd take a stab at putting it back together yourself. Having a running driving car that YOU finished yourself would be most rewarding IMO. It seems that you can take your time on this one and put it back together how you want. It just takes time and patience and would be a good learning experience.

Or you cut your losses and get whatever money back you can by parting it out. I would advise against paying a shop money to put it back together because then you will just be out of pocket more.

You basically removed the last 3 options by claiming to not have the time.

IMO, do not sell unless you need the money. You can always come back to it when your time/space permits. It's only a motor that needs to be installed.

Oh, and make some calls outside of Ottawa. Shipping a car is relatively cheap.
      oh hai!

I would rather be apart of the building process. There is so much to be learned from these cars. Half the fun is wrenching on it, the other half is enjoying the results and driving it.
