Hello everyone,
So I recently picked up an r32 GTR (about 3 months ago), and lucky for me, it came with a few goodies.... One of these goodies being; dual electric slim fans, made by Mishimoto. Now I've heard good things about going electric, and I've hear bad things. But these came free with the car....... Might as well see how they work. So I decided to try fitting my brand new slim fans this past weekend, figured no big deal right ? Wrong. I ran into a few issues, and I'd like some feedback from the friendly people here on GTRC, on how I got around these issues. I don't know if what I did is going work, or if people have tried doing/done this before, but I'm gonna lay it out anyways! Here goes;
So I started by taking off the factory clutch fan, that is apparently horsepower hungry. Mine is cracked a little too, so all the more reason to go electric.
I disconnected the upper radiator hose, and tried sliding the fans in....... No go.
The power steering lines were in the way, obviously. (thread title lol)
So I went online and looked up my fan type, and right on the Mishimoto site, it says; The fans that I have, do not fit skylines that have Hicas, Great ! So I started questioning as to how I could make these pretty cool (and brand new) fans work. And the only option I could see was to move the power steering lines that were right in my way (pic below)
So by unscrewing the top 2 bolts, (which were very tight) I could move the lines a few centimeters in either direction, which wasn't good enough
I needed to get this line (yellow arrow) out of its "guide" and out of the way. And same with the other one (green arrow)
So I undid the line, and moved it right up and over it's guide, to the right, no problem except now it was right in the way of the big intercooler down pipe thing. Not gonna cut it.
So, I undid these 2 nuts just enough (yellow arrows) so that the male end of the intercooler plumbing had enough clearance, with the power steering line still being right underneath it. Problem one solved.
Now for the second line, undo the banjo bolt, and take the line right off. There will be a collar type thing that is stopping the line from moving side to side. Slide this collar up and off (picture below) easy enough, only one bolt holding it down.
*note on both lines, careful for the brass washers, you need these, and they are easily lost.
What I had to wind up doing, (very hard to explain why this had to be done, but if you have to move this line you will understand why) was putting a washer underneath this weird connector thing between the top of the line and the pump. (Pic below)
Here is the washer, (it is actually a key ring, that wound up fitting perfectly, ill put proper brass in there at a later time) and where the washer should sit on the connector.
Here is the washer;
The washer (or key ring for now) should sit right there, and will be sandwiched on the pump.
Then you can now move this line out of the way as far as it will go, and be able to properly tighten down the bolt (this is where the washer helps). The picture below should be what the lines look like finished and (slightly) out of the way;
So now that both of the lines are moved mostly out of the way, I was able to slide the fans down, with almost no trouble at all! The one line is touching the shroud, but it should be fine. And the clearance between the pulley is slim, but nothing to be worried about. Everything all dry fitted, looks like its going to work great.......
Now here is my question everyone, is this setup going to work ? Will the banjo bolts for the lines still be in the right place ? Or will it even matter ? Will I leak fluid from the washer I added ? (after i replace it with a proper one) Will the little extra stress on the rubber lines affect anything ?
Thank you all for responses, let me know if you have any questions or If I missed anything, I'd love some opinions on what I did here, this job was quite a pain in the ass, and I hope it wasn't a waste !
