  • Rear diff : Used Nismo/ATS or brand new Kaaz ?

    Hello,

I bought an used ATS rear diff for a good price, but I'm having second thought... Considering I never drove with a rear 1.5way diff before ( mine is still stock), I'm looking for input from fellow owner who drove on them and either bought it used or new.

So basicly, you can find used diff for about 600-700. Like the ATS metal or carbon ( but heard that carbon can be fragile.. so i rather go metal) or the Nismo GT lsd or a cusco rs.

Or if I go brand new, I found out about the KAAZ SuperQ... almost double the price at 1300$ new, but it is said to be as quiet as stock, engagement very smoothly and no break-in at all. Sound a bit like all the characteristic of the Quaiffe but in a metal clutch type which I like.

I also find out that the rebuilt kit ( 19 plates) for the oem transfer-case is 530$ so they money i save on an used diff could go toward the new plate for the t-case in order to achieve better traction for future years

    What would you do ?

be careful with carbon. As they wear, the carbon dust is very abrasive but not magnetic so it cannot be collected like metal plate debris meaning short oil change intervals.

If you're on a budget, stay stock (or get a stock replacement). If not on a budget, OS giken is tough to beat at $1500 or whatever they are. Expect 3-6 hours labour cost to install plus gasket/seals depending on condition.
    No build thread.

I have the ATS 1.5 way in my track only R32 GTR

      It is fantastic for me.

However for street use it is a bit of bear in tight corners and parking.

It is also noisier at speed compared to stock.

If you go aftermarket make sure you get it set up properly. If the preload isn't set right it will never work right.

Guess I will simply stick to oem lol too much factor to go wrong for a daily car like mine. I just happen to hit the drag from time to time and wished I could put as much torque to the ground as I can.

I have the Kaaz 1.5 way in my year round daily r33..

It's been in the car since 2009 and has about 100k km on it. It's probably due for a rebuild in 2015. But so far no noise or other problems.

Just downshifting you have to watch not to do it too early or the back end will break loose a little, in wet or snowy conditions.

Overall I love it... In the summer on r-comp tires, accelerating out of a corner is bliss.
