Letter from the ministry of Transport

Hi Guys,
After all the fuss CADA and their greedy friends made trying to ban RHD recently, I wrote to the MTO, the Honorable Kathleen Wynne to ask exactly what their position was on the matter and if they had any desire to see us taken off the road. I actually got a response in the mail from Kathleen's office, stating that they had no plans to change Canada's 15 year law and that imports are safe.

On a related note, Dale Leier and I are looking for a JDM driving Lawyer who might volunteer his services to draft a single form letter on behalf of JDM drivers in Canada, to send out to all organizations like CADA, Canadian Safety Council and the like to stop slandering us in the Media. can you please venture over to www.cavi.ca and www.ivoac.ca and post this up there as well... this is what we need...

could you also contact some of the media outlets with this info as many of the papers are claiming that "CADA has called upon TC to change the laws" yet there is never any response from TC about it... with a response like this it would remove some of the " i wonder where TC stands oin the issue " thoughts

at ivoac one of the members has hired a lawyer in regards to some ofthe QC issue so he is already familiar with the issue at hand... so make sure you get over there and post up

This just helped out a bunch! Its good they actually replied. What does it mean by They are exempt from complying with Canadian motor vehicle standards and federal emission standards? Dont we still need to get e test and safety before registering the car?

We can confirm this as well. We spoke with the ministry and with someone within the senate hearings from when CADA went before them. The MOT has no desire to pursue CADA's requests.

exempt from current standards means they dont have to comply with the current level of standards

for emissions they are exempt from federal testing

however since the provinces have there own parts of legislation they still must past a safety test which is ensuring the vehicle is in good working order, not that it meets our standards just that it is mechanically safe, for emissions again that is a provincial thing and only for certain areas... im in BC but i dont have to do the air care due to my location.

That's cool that you got a reply.

Two things, though.

1) MTO cannot amend nor regulate a federal statute. The 15 year old import regulation is federal jurisdiction and it is in the hands of Transport Canada. Obviously the MTO can weigh in on the matter and, yes, the MTO could set independent prohibitions at the provincial level. It is pleasing to hear that they will not be doing that.


2) This is just a side note really, but it's pretty funny that the reply didn't mention the exception in sec 63 of the HTA. The reply actually made it seem like the RHD label is necessary and that electrical turn signals are necessary.

Both of which aren't true.

Still.... I'll take it.

It is good to hear good news in the midst of all the negativity surrounding RHD's


I am from Alberta and i went in to change my insurance over to my truck for the winter and i thought it was a good time to ask my broker if she has heard anything regarding RHD's vehicles.


She said she hasn't heard anything regarding there ban or anything of that sort,so that was good to hear as well (im sure most of you already knew that though)
