  • Vin Exception List

    Hey Guys,

Been Struggling for 4 months now to get my Gts-T on the road. Finally got insurance and all that fun stuff (its like banging your head against a wall) Now when i go to the DMV they say i need to put my car on an exception list because of the shorter vin and that my insurance company would take care of it. Now ive called my insurance company and they have "suppositively" put it on the list. but it still wont go through at the DMV.

Apparently in ontario they have a new system which combines the insurance database with that of the DMV. This allows cops to see you do infact have insurance when they run your plates

I do have the pink slip for insurance, Shouldnt this be enough to in a sense over ride the computer system? Has anyone else run into this problem? or should i just try another DMV haha?

    thanks guys

I have never heard of an "Exception list" before. Could be a new add on to the system.

You could try asking your insurance company to add zeros to the end of the VIN to over ride the system. My insurance agent was already fond of the short VIN's on JDM cars, and she told me all she will do to over ride the system is add zero's on the end to make it 17 digits. For example on my insurance slip is says "BNR32-2xxxx7000000"

Ask your agent and see what they say.

    Good luck.

The zeroes are what I hear of happening most often. Probably the best route to go. I'd definitely ask about it!

        Weird
In BC, mine is only insured as: ECR-007156 no zero's what so ever

Maybe an Ontario thing? My agent said there is no way to by pass the system unless you added the zero's. She also mentioned not a lot of company's insure RHD because they dont know how to over ride the system.

I went to the MTO (we don't have a DMV) yesterday to get my sticker and no problems. The lady just asked me if I have valid insurance.

However, when I got my sticker for the subie, it was more of a fight. Long story short, they just had to override the system and I was done. It was just the lady working there that didn't want to do it at first. I think thats what the other lady did to my GTR.

In either of my 2 cases, no mention of an 'exceptions list' was made. Really, just goto another MTO and try again. This supposed 'exceptions list' is confusing them.

Which MTO office did you go to in Mississauga? I am dealing with the same ******** and can't renew my plates. I asked my insurance company about this exception list and they don't know what it is. I went to 4 different MTO offices too, and they keep saying contact my insurance company.

I have been dealing with this problem for the last month. I was told i needed to be put on this exception list so i asked my insurance to do so and now they want an appraisal for a liability only policy.
The only way you can override this to get stickers is to have an original pink slip from insurance company.
If you get pulled over with out being on the exception list there is a good chance you could get charged with not having insurance.

This is ******** because most cases insurance companies want an appraisal to put you on the exception list and if you have ANY mods done to your car you will most likely not make it on that list...

Yea it is ********. The thing is, I do have my original pink slip, but they still will not give me a sticker . ******* JDM cars. I guess another solution would be to get a MTO re-vin.

I would like to hear somthing from Right drive because i dont think a dealer can release a car to a customer till they have insurance and it can take a long time to be put on this exception list to even get stickers.

The DMV bypassed the system for me once i provided my pink slip etest and safety. They told me to hassle my insurance to update it on the exception list. I called desjardins and just kept asking to speak to managers and the higher ups. I explained my situtation, they agreed and said they would call once it has been updated. I got a call 2 days later saying i was good to go.

It seems that this is happening more often now that everyone is trying to put their cars on the road and it is becoming more of an issue. they never seem to resolve anything and it just gets and over-ride.
