Your insurance company needs to put you on the exception list to get a sticker.....
The only way to get a sticker without being on the exception list is to have a valid actual pink slip from you insurer and even then the MTO will need to call it in and have it overridden.
IF the police are on the same system as the MTO with the insurance companies than you will not have valid insurance without being on the excemption list and risk a hefty fine.Last edited by belontay_type-m; 04-14-2011, 12:00 AM.90 R32 GTS-T

just keep at it dude. ask the people at the mto exactly what they mean and then call the insurance company and explain it. once the car is in the new system then you shouldnt have problems getting a sticker in the futureJordie Lewis

I got my car on the exception list and got my sticker!
Your insurance company has to contact the insurance Bureau of Canada to get your car put on the exception list. The person they contact at the IBC is Steve Thomason. He puts your car on the list. It must be your insurance company that calls, not you.
His contact information is:
Steve Thomason
Senior Automotive Research Analyst
Insurance Bureau of Canada | Vehicle Data Services
T: 416.445.5912 ext.2282| F: 416.644.3139
E: sthomason@ibc.ca
Tell your broker to contact him!

I went in to get my plates renewed and they couldn't register my vin. I was then told by mto to call my broker and tell them to put me on the vin exception list which would be done real time so that they could give me my stickers immediately. Well 2 hours later my broker said he'd send up the memo to the insurance company and it should be done in a day or two. Needless to say I wasn't impressed.

You guys are using the wrong nomenclature and probably confusing the hell out of the MTO people and thus getting a poor response.
There is no "exceptions" list, what happens is due to the atypical length of the original JDM VINs, the registration offices need to call into the central MTO registry (located in Kingston) and speak to one of their officials to conduct a manual override and basically "force" a JDM VIN into the system. To get this done, you'll need your safety, E-test + the export certificates if you're car was from out of province.
More importantly, you'll need to provide valid and "live" insurance coverage and the pink-slip, because the licensing and insurance systems are now integrated into one unified system.

The 5 MTOs I went to said our Insurance company needs to enter the vin on this "exception list", no confusion at all.
With my new car I had safty, etest and export certificates and the system needed to be overridden.
So if I'm getting stickers for a car I have owned for years do I need to get another safty, etest and export certificates that most people don't have and the MTO should have on file?90 R32 GTS-T
