  • Insurance/ Importing whats changed whats stayed the same

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum as well as new to buying imports and importing a car. Currently I'm saving up trying to buy an R33 and eventually an R34. I was wondering if people with who own any GTR's whos close to my age or my age (19) I was wondering if you can tell me what your insurance is like? My record is 2 speeding tickets for going 10 over and 15 over and lame ticket for "hiding my license plate" when it wasn't hidden. Any input would be greatly appreciated As well as for importing I guess I'd have to learn my self but if anyone can recommend any places that I should look at first or places you guys had good experience that would be awesome too! oh and btw I guess I should say.. I do live in Ontario and yes I do insurance is PITA soo people in Ontario if you can give me feedback greatly appreciated!

PS. yeah I know people ask this a lot but I kinda but looking through old posts it seems kinda dated.. and I'd wanna make sure I have good understanding of the current laws and if there are any changes

First off, this has been covered numberous times. Use the search function.

Anyways, if youre under 25 its hard to find a place that will insure you and those that will, have prices that will make you **** bricks. Prepare to get price quotes close to 5-10 grand/year. Some insurance groups like require age of 25+ and it has to be your secondary vehicle / can't be your daily driver.

Its a topic that never gets old so even the threads started some years ago are still very active. The only thing that has changed in recent years is the cost increasing as the govt doesn't want RHD vehicles or imports in the country as they claim it hurts our economy and the whole issue with traffic merging being on the opposite side / left hand turning in a LHD vehicle without being able to see past the centre-island curb.
    Double track drift, yo.

thanks, yeah well the plan was to insure the under my name... I knew insurance would be brutal but not that brutal. The thing is the car will be a daily driver in summer and stored for the winter... but I doubt that would make a difference

I'll be honest with you, at 19 years old with 3 tickets you will not be insured by any company. Facility will insure you, but it will probably be $5K-$10K per year as the poster above noted.
I'd recommend either waiting until you are 25, or having your parents insure it with you as secondary driver. Even then it will be extremely tough.

No, seasonal wouldn't make a big difference as almost everyone on here does that and is still getting murdered (the younger, newer owners.) There are quite a few owners on here under 20 but again if you havent been with these companies prior to their policy changes against JDM vehicles than its going to either be very hard or very pricey.

Also going to mention that some of the insurance firms will only accept the vehicle in your name and not as a secondary to a parent/guardian. Its a harsh time for JDM owners and im sure its only going to get worse, Especially when the R34 start rolling in and some asshole politician uses statistics of huge volume import registrations as campaign propaganda because it apparently "puts automotive factory workers out of business."

There isn't much we can do. Just like a regular car dealership like Nissan etc., we don't actually sell insurance as we are not an insurance company. We do our best to work hard and help our clients, and many of them are satisfied. But in terms of major pull with insurance companies, they control the market, and they can do what they want.
In my opinion, regardless of how the insurance thing pans out, it will always be difficult for an under-25 year old to get insurance on an RHD car, especially a GT-R.

Just FYI, I just checked the insurance rate for a Corvette, 22 year old with 1 ticket, it is $5085 per year at the cheapest rate. Doesn't sound too far off from Facility rates for a GT-R.

Yeah 19, 3 tickets, not already insured on a appraised vehicle.
I would wait till your 25 or land a killer job.
There are some cool cars you can get in the mean time (trust me you'll be in your mid 20's in no time.... * sigh

yeah it does seem kinda hard for me to get at this time.. I may as well probably wait later although I'm insured as a secondary its not as expensive... but I guess if a GTR is outta my hands I could always move to the next car on my list :P and get a GTR later ...sigh. the joy of living in ontario with HIGH rates
