  • Last race at Suzuka Circuit 2010

This past Sunday was my final race at Suzuka Circuit, a bittersweet end to the season, it's always awesome to race there, but I was a little sad knowing it would be my last time.
We had two 30 minute sessions, and the groups were large this time, about 65 cars per group. Suzuka is long, so 65 actually isn't too much, but it's more than I've raced with before.
I had the GT-R in for Nismo stabilizer bars, Nismo Solid Shift, oil change and brake fluid change, along with Nismo plugs and a new coil harness before the race. The stabilizer bars made an immediate difference, and the Solid Shift provided a more direct shift feel.
As always, the craziest of the crazy were out in full force at this event, with many cars being trucked in due to their "non-street legalness". The regular Sting Racing crew with 3 NSXs, 2 GT-Rs and others (M3, IF etc) were there as well. A couple other crazy NSXs showed up, and a lone female in a white BNR32 that was crazy fast (and I must say she was absolutely beautiful as well, the woman I mean ).
An acquaintance of mine was also there with his Ferrari, and dumped his R35 in favour of his BNR32 this time. You can see the Ferrari in front of me in the videos, along with the BRN32 spitting flames all over the place.

I finished 33 out of the 65 cars, not breaking my lap record, but coming close. The second session started in rain, so most of the session was just "fun driving" for me, not pushing it right to the edge. It was a nice, relaxing way to spend the final laps at Suzuka. All in all, another awesome day, and no major crashes, so everyone went home in one piece.

Here are the videos and pics! (Videos shot on GoPro 720 HD)

        Great footage Daryl!
The GoPro is quite a unit - it felt like I was there!!!
I enjoyed every minute of the experience and have made a mental note to expand my track horizons. Suzuka looks like a great spot to call 'home' and the cars you were running with were fantastic. As nice as many of them are, your GTR ranks very near the top in my books and you drive it very smoothly. Makes me proud to share part of the automotive heritage.
Thx for a great 15 or 20 minutes!
        Cheers,

Thanks Dan! The Go Pro is a real easy camera to use, and the quality is great. They have nice mounts for motorsports use. I highly recommend it if you want a way to record your driving experiences. There is no monitor screen on it, but really you don't need one anyways.

After watching the videos I can't say that I'm satisfied with my driving, I could have been a lot more aggressive, especially in the turns on the back half of the circuit, but all in all, I had an amazing time and don't regret any second of it. Suzuka is so great because of the way it flows, long straights, high speed corners, it's awesome, but I'm not sure if I can find the same type of circuit in Canada.
Well, it looks like I'll be spending as much time at Mosport as I can afford to! Touge.ca seems to have some nice events there.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the videos, I didn't think anyone would actually watch them!

By the way, the fastest cars in my group were:

            1. red NSX
            2. blue NSX
            3. silver R32 GT-R
            4. purple R33 GT-R
            5. gunmetal R32 GT-R
            6. white NSX

You can be smooth without being fast, but you can't be fast without being smooth! A few times I was watching lower powered cars pulling away on corner exit (and found my right foot twitching a bit), but rarely saw any jerky corrections. A guy can always improve, but I think you're going about it the right way.
My own experience is that there's more time to be gained getting on the throttle earlier on corner exit than carrying more speed into the corner.
              Cheers,

                That sounds about right!
A older friend of mine is a multiple time champion in a racing series at Suzuka, and he was explaining at which point he starts braking for each turn. What he does differently than me is brake hard, 90% of brake force, for 1 second, then comes off the brakes completely, and allows the car to go through the turn without brake or gas, letting the tires do their job, then hard on the gas at exit. I found myself braking slightly earlier, but not as hard, and going through the corners with lighter braking, so in effect, soft braking through the whole turn, as opposed to a single hard brake before the turn. I wish I had more time to test his technique and compare the two.
I'm still relatively inexperienced though, so lots of time to learn!

                  Hey Daryl

Very very nice write up of photos and videos! As someone else said, it made me feel I was actually there! Your car sounds very nice!

As for smoothness, maybe I can help. I have zero track experience but lots of good high performance training but I can say this. I recently read a book about racing secrets. Basically exploits the details of driving a racecar. I will slightly change up the wording into my own words but this is it in a nutshell. Power means nothing without a good suspension setup, a stock car with good suspension can be a lot faster in turns than any car with tons of power. Likewise, a car with a great suspension setup can be a lot slower in a corner when the driver is jerking the wheel around and being rough on brakes and accel. Smoothness translates into balance and balance to the cars suspension then to the rubber which is the most important part. Keeping more even weight distribution keeps traction delivered throughout, again translating from smoothness. He also says how a few drivers really like to practice turning the wheel as little as possible through a turn. This gives a slightly different line but keeps balance prime!

Hope that didn't come out too confusing. Keep up the good work.

                  Rob.

I'll be going back to visit, but basing myself in Canada from now on. It sucks in some ways, but it's the direction I want to take my life now.
