  • Ebisu Fall Grip Matsuri 11-2010

When you hear about Ebisu Circuit, the thought of drifting springs to mind. In the last couple of years at least, media gateways like Speedhunters and others alike have done a spectacular job in sharing the best of drifting out of this well know circuit. However many do forget that the main design was based around circuit racing. From team endurance racing events up to Formula 1600 series open wheel race cars.

Each year, Ebisu not only holds three drift matsuri’s but also three grip matsuri’s. It’s a bit scaled down when compared to the ‘in your face’ drift events, but for the wheel men out there, it really is bliss. Honestly, where exactly can you go in Japan and run for 32 hours straight? And all for 15,000YEN! Simply a bargain for anyone wanting the best of track fun.

This fall event took place just last weekend. Attendance was from 50-100 cars split between the Higashi & Nishi courses. Good variety of cars as well. Some Kei vehicles blasting around up to well sorted time attack vehicles.

Quick layout courtesy of Andy from Drift Life/Power Vehicles.

Onto the track, some great images from the main straight on the Higashi Course. This course is just over 2KM in length and boasts some real challenging sections. Some of course when not attacked right will drastically throw your time out the window. Been there, done that. It sucks!

In focus at a fairly tight hairpin turn around mid course.

In and around the paddock between sessions left a lot of time to meet some new friends. Definitely a great time to check out some of the cars on hand and to also find out what everyone is running. From tires, to selected spring rates and what not. The amount of info you gather at some of these events is hard to take in.

This BNR32 for instance, didn’t have much in the mod area, but did extremely well with the suspension and tire, wheel selection. Shame I only caught him out during one session.

Another great looking one would have to be this S13 Silvia Q’s. Totally stripped out interior, spot welded everything including that cage tying everything together. Surprising, the motor was NA on this one. A pure spec class race car with nothing more than a well balance SR20 engine with good ecu management.

Crummy action shot of the S13 on the Nishi main straight.

A sight for sore eyes this one. Owner was a little to hot in the corner on cold Dunlop 02G’s. Airbags deployed as well. With the help of his buddy’s, they had this one tied back together by the end of the weekend.

Boosted Altezza anyone? A vehicle that hardly see’s any good spot lights these days. Surely it’s a great car to begin with. Not to mention the racing history they hold from the Altezza cup series some years ago.

    To be continued...

Hey Marc. Camera is nothing flashy. Pentax K100D. For static shots I use a very high quality 12-24mm wide lens. Lens was the same cost as the camera. And for those distant shots, using a 50-200mm zoom lens. I also have another 75-300mm zoom and macro lens, but never needed them at this event.

I would like to step up to a Canon 40D, but really not shooting as much these days. Money could be spent elsewhere.

Not to mention the photos really came out great regardless. Stills ftw. Action shots are all about shutter speed and when you're looking at 1/8000ths' you're spending some serious bucks, and thats only a damn lens!

I've not got much experience with the Pentax but the Canon is a nice setup.. Ideally if you want to focus on the simple everyday stills, look for something that can take RAW images, and get a program like the new Adobe Photoshop that input and edit raw images, as well as HDR which was a nice feature after CS2.. Its worth the extra bucks on software. A lot of people rely on a solid camera build to snap good photos, but even a simple point and shoot can turn into an unbelievable image if the editing is done well

Again, good shots! Always enjoy seeing peoples photos!
