  • CACC Solo Sprint 2011

So I start my 2011 Solo Sprint Campaign at Mission Raceway this Saturday, April 16th.
This particular event is actually considered Time Attack, because of the passing zones and multiple cars on track.

Everyone do a sundance for me.

What an awesome day at Mission. I managed to make Pole after the qualifying session. I had help with the track being wet and 4wd.

In the final timed session, the guy that was second (driving a late 90's Camaro SS) on grid had put on a brand new set of Kumho V710's (295's) and the track was bone dry. I knew he was going to be tough to beat, but everyone was expecting the Vauxhaul Mini to win it all(fourth on grid).

Sitting at the Pole before the session I noticed that I had less than an 1/8 of a tank of fuel. I was shocked considering I started the day with 3/4's. I had to leave the pole for the paddock to get a splash. When I got back I missed the 5 min marker and had to go to the back, but I waited for the cars to come around before I entered the track so I fell in behind the Mini. I was managing to hang with the Mini for the first two lap. He was crazy fast in the corners and I knew I was pushing hard, but I had a bit of an edge on the straits.

Coming on to the front strait(1/4 mile drag strip) the Mini slowed half way down and then pulled out off at an exit. He blew the clutch and sent a piece thru the rad.

So it was down to me and the Camaro SS. He is a very experience driver at Mission and with his fresh boots I knew I would be hard pressed. The GTR ran great and I was becoming way more confident. I start passing the slow cars, one of which was a C5 Z06. Even with the splash of fuel I took on I had to end my session early for fear of starving the car.

My fastest time was 1:18.0. Even with only 2 lap the Mini pulled out a 1:18.7. The Camaro SS was on fire and pulled off an amazing time of 1:16.9. I was very impressed, but I had to remind myself I was running on my Z214's from last year. So can I make up 1.1 seconds with newer boots? Never the less I was very happy with a 2nd place overall finish, first in my class and new personal best time at Mission of 1:18.0.

Well I was all set to take another crack at Mission on July 9th. I had new front rotors and had some air guides made up to cool the front brakes, so I could brake harder, but most of all I had some fresh R1's on the CE28N's.

Not only that, but I had been given some pointers by the driver that holds the record lap(1:15.9) out of all the Street Prepared Classes. I was very confident the 1:17's were very do-able.

My GTR was all set up the morning of the race and had just pasted tech. The driver meeting was just starting, when I went into encephalitic shock and then spent most of the day in the hospital. During the setup I was getting eaten alive by mosquito's. I haven't confirmed they were the cause with a specialist, but I don't know what else could have caused it. According to the hospital they had admitted a few people that day for the same thing. I am allergic to wasps and bees, but I had never had a reaction to mosquito bites before.

Any way I won't get another crack at Mission until October.

I think I still have alot to learn about Mission and driving fast. Plus I have yet to corner balance my GTR and I will be putting in a full cage in the off season. Once all of that is sorted I think 1:16's is do-able.

So the 2011 season is over and I managed to take home another CACC Solo Sprint Championship. This season was not overly competitive in my class. However at the last event, I was pitted against a 70 Camaro Z28. This car was a thing of beauty, but what made it special was the fact it was running a twin turbo LS6. He would not tell me the Hp# but said that it pumped out 675lbs ft. I figure thats good for over 700hp. He managed to beat me by .7 seconds. I think if he had bigger rear tire he would have been faster.

I will be keeping the GTR in the garage for next as I will be getting married and get a new home, so I will have to sacrifice for 2012.

Nice job! Good to see other owners putting their Skylines in to competition.
Although I missed quite a few of our Time Attack events here I did manage an FTD at my last one...
