  • Anyone interested in RB External Oil Pump Kits ?

I am in the process of working out a deal with a local friend who will build External Oil Pump Kits for me in quantity if I desire, so I thought I would share them here if anyone was ready to take that step.

The kit is quite simple as it stands. The OEM Oil Pump is used as a cover and line sump/feed with gears removed. An external oil pump is mounted in place of the air conditioning and plumbed in using 3 lines (sump is a 2 piece with mid-inline-filter) then belt driven off the crankshaft/balancer. Fully adjustable pressure and is based on a Big Block Chevy Racing pump used on 1500+ HP Race Motors where Dry Sump Systems are prohibited by rules.

Here is what I am getting together (Top portion ONLY, you supply second portion).

Bolt On Kit would include: (Under $500 CAD)
    -------------------------------------------

    - Adjustable External Oil Pump Bracket.
(RB26, for Moroso 22600 External 1 Stage Pump).

    - Modified OEM RB Oil Pump Housing.
(Gears removed, partially sealed internally - MALE Oil Sump and Feed Fittings installed).

    - Oil Sump Line(s), 10 AN w/fittings.
(2 Lines, FEMALE both ends, intended for pre-pump inline 10 AN Oil filter).

    - Oil Feed Line, 10 AN w/fittings.
(Single Line direct from PUMP to Engine BLOCK OIL FEED on MOD'd Pump Housing)

What you would still need to buy: (Budget $1500 CAD)
    ----------------------------------------------------

    - Crank/Harmonic Balancer Capable of Sump/Gear Drive.
(Ross w/ Gilmer Bolt-On Gear, ATI 1000HP + Drive Mandrel)

    - Pump Gear Drive Kit (to suit Balancer/drive choice). Pump Gear, Drive Gear, Drive Belt.

    - Moroso 22600 External Single Stage Oil Pump.
(Most Common. 1500+ HP Big Block Chevy Racing Pump, where Dry Sumps are outlawed by rules)

    - 10 AN Inline Male/Male Oil Filter.
(your choice of filters, Plumbed BEFORE Pump to protect Pump)

    - OEM Oil Pump Gasket.

    PROs:
    -----

    - Kit will be 100% bolt On and will not interupt OEM filter location.
(OEM Filters and Aftermarket Cooler and Relocation Kits work normally).

    - System uses 100% Factory Oiling system, but fed externally rather than using internal gears in pump.
(No Modifications need to be done by YOU that are required to use kit - everything done pre-delivery)

    - No Special Oil Pans/Sumps required (although optional, your choice). Uses OEM pickup system (Both PRO & CON).

    - With recommended Moroso Pump, System can produce 90+ PSI Oil Pressure (6 BAR +) and High Volume.

    - Expandable Kit, beginning with easiest configuration (OEM Oil Pickup - expand to external pickup later on?)

    - Expandable.....Expandable........Expandable

    CONs:
    -----

    - Buyer MUST provide an OEM Oil Pump for EXCHANGE at time of purchase (broken gears are fine).

    - Users will have to sacrifice Air Conditioning, as this is the new Oil Pump mount location.

    - ATI 500HP Balancer WILL NOT WORK (doesn't have Mandrel Mount, 1000HP Balancer REQUIRED or ROSS Brand)

    - As per Standard OIL PUMP INSTALL (Engine out or carefully done on stands).

    - Initial Configuration of kit utilizes OEM Oil Pickup so Sump Baffles/Pickup Mods are still required for Track use.

At the end of the day, the purpose of this setup is to give users the security of never having to worry about broken Pump gears ever again and is the next best thing to a Dry Sump System at about 1/2 the Cost of a PROPER Dry Sump configuration and 1/8 the installation/plumbing time. 99% of people will employ sump baffling and pickup MODs as part of a build anyways as well as Pan modifications, all of which this system further benefits from.

This system (approx $2000 CAD Complete with Balancer budgeted in) is aimed at people that are somewhere in between a TOMEI Pump ($1500+ CAD) and a Full Dry Sump System ($3500+) and maintains the ease of installation of an OEM pump and Air Conditioning Pump/Bracket when all is said and done.

If you are interested, please post.

I am initially looking to get 4-5 Brackets made and 2 or so Oil Pump Housings modified. I will get more if there is interest.

    Hey,

I am interested in following this thread. I am working on a kit for the rb30 and I cannot see how it would be much different to the rb26. This is what I came up with so far,

Pump - Peterson external oil pump, right hand side mounted ( to keep air con and power steering). Pump would run off a peterson crank drive kit with an ATI balancer.

Peterson also have a scavenge filter which is what I would use between the sump pickup and the pump itself.

Moroso have an external oil pump pickup, its around $50USD. Modify the sump to suit the new pickup mounted on the right hand side of the sump (same side as filter). This pickup uses a -12 fitting so I would be using -12 fittings all the way through the kit along with either 100 series or 200 series speedflow lines.

Moroso have a nice remote oil filter mount, it has -12 fittings (inlet / outlet), a spare -12 for a temp gauge / pressure / oil cooler line, and 2 x 3/8"NPT fitting for a pressure gauge or temp gauge. Looks good, a bit expensive though. The thread size on the mount would suit a K&N filter too (more on this soon). Then I would use another Moroso oil filter block off plate which would perfectly suit the block also has a single -12 fitting.

The reason I am looking at the K&N filter against an inline oil filter is the cost. The elements to replace the inline filters from peterson are over $50 USD, the K&N filters are about $12!, the bracket used is a little expensive but it gives the user the opportunity to mount the oil filter where ever they want in the engine bay, the costs of using one against the inline filter would cheaper over time.

I will post some pics when I get everything set up...

As I said, just a different perspective on the kit you're thinking of making. I hope you dont mind.

        yes, me too!

Left side would be better. Right side is too crowded. I dont know anyone who cares about A/C if they are in consideration of a external pump. Not in Canada anyways and we dont have those mechanical inspections your cops like to give out to modded cars. In any case, pictures of both set ups would be great as well as a priced and parts projection on the system your building for your 30.

I'm on the fence about either of these right now. Tomei oil pumps have been used quite often and without issues while producing good oil flow however the extra cost for more security is ok. Getting rid of the AC on a street car is stupid when you're married however I'd like to see more information... Got much else for data?

                  I lost interest.....

I bought my Moroso pump and am building my own kit (maybe 2 just to be safe), but will most likely NOT mass produce the bracketry anymore. Not enough interest and I don't want to be out of pocket for anything.
