    Previously we reported on the Nissan GT-R’s ‘uncrackable’ speed limiter, which could only be delimited when entering circuits via a GPS link. While Nissan assured customers the encryption on the ECU was very sophisticated and difficult to crack, U.S.-based COBB tuning has indeed cracked the speed limiter and is now working on sorts of other modifications including the fuel-mapping and boost pressure controls.

    r35_ecu1.jpgCurrently the GT-R is limited to 180km/h (112mph) unless the car detects you’re at a race track, but COBB tuning reports that they have removed it and are currently undertaking in-house testing. COBB’s GT-R is a Japanese-domestic-market model, but the company predicts that by the time North American spec cars arrive they will be well prepared and practiced in the art of tuning the GT-R’s ECU. Without the speed limit, the GT-R can hit a claimed 193mph.

    COBB also has a number of modified ECUs for Nissan’s 350Z and Infiniti’s G37. Other modifications the tuner has in store for the new Nissan lineup include high-flow intake and exhaust systems, suspension and handling mods, electronic boost controllers and carbon-fiber accessories.

    As we reported earlier, big Japanese manufacturers have also been tinkering with the ECU and companies such as Mines and Top Secret have been able to install custom wheels and engine mods without the ECU going haywire.

    As far as I know that speed limiter is only on jdm models. So its not too big a deal. But good to hear that lots of companies are making some custom ecu's. I don't know what Nissan was thinking with that...

      Cobb Tuning (again)

      Cobb Tuning has re-engineered its AccessPort control unit for the new R35 Nissan GT-R. For those of you lucky enough to own a GT-R and not content with its performance out of the box, the $995 AccessPort will reflash the ECU to any one of six different tuning levels.

      There are three levels each for Stage 1 and Stage 2. Stage 1 can get you up to 63 additional ponies and 70 lb.-ft. of additional twist, while Stage 2 can boost the numbers by 70 and 90 respectively. The AccessPort can also save your stock ECU data and reflash it when you decide you're finished with all that extra gumption. According to a GT-R owner who tried it out, you can be blowing past all those regular GT-Rs in less than an hour.

      And that's not all: you can store multiple engine mapping programs, remove trouble codes, install reduced-power valet and economy modes, and update maps over the Internet. It seems like a ridiculously easy proposition for making your supercar that much more super. So if you got one of those GT-Rs that are a little low on horses, this could be just the ticket.

        Haltech in Australia is another that has a ECU for R35 GTR (including dyno graph, videoclip of R35GTR on the dragstrip, etc) -



        This is a Platinum ECU that they are using on the R35 GTR -



        There's said to be another ECU in development that replaces the stock ECU.

          Fair enough, but the ability to reprogram your ECU for various conditions etc. is very, very cool. Wish they had that sh!t for my S5.
