That palm looking island was designed to enlarge the length of the coastline. Something about beating someone elses coastline length. They had an article on TV (Discovery channel) about the construction and how they had to dredge out at deep parts of the sea to get some solid mud for foundations of the palm island vs the not so solid sand, which was closer to land.

                  dubai is pretty incredible.

I really wonder what it will look like in another 20 years.

Also, I wonder how hard it is to get a visa and a job there? I wouldn't mind spending a year there, and it must pay well.

It does too make me wonder where the hell all of our oil money is going, we have such a shitty government, we're sitting on a goldmine and local unemployment here is over 10%. WTF.

Are there no oil field guys on these forums??

You guys ever think of the cost of extracting our oil versus the cost of extracting oil over there?

Go take a look at all the rigs up north and the equipment and the roads needed to get the equipment out there and the cost of labour, remember we don't have India/Pakistan/Saudi Arabia and Egypt to hire workers for a dime a dozen.

Then there's our refining and our oil control and then trade agreements and etc...etc.

Comparing our oil cost to Dubai's oil cost is like comparing Skyline's and Rolls Royce's.

It says in the link below that they try to encourage foreign investors to invest there -

Dubai itself is not tax-free, but there are a number of tax-free zones in the region. The most famous tax-free areas in Dubai are...

I wonder if that's where some of the money is coming from to build those buildings.

And there was a article on TV about the Beckhams, etc having money invested in Dubai.

                        Here's a article mentioning their names -

From what I understand, if you live there, have to respect their customs, laws.

but of course like any other city like this (las vegas) there will be surrounding towns that will basically be the slums. All the workers that clean the hotel rooms and sweep the lobby of the 7 star hotel arent making any money basically.

I heard Dubai is mostly tapped out of oil on 60 minutes once. So they motioned to make huge tarif-free ports as a gateway from Asia to the Middle East and Northward. They are the largest port in the area and attracted thousands of businesses, developers and consumers.

There are something like only 250,000 citizens each one gets a free (pimp) house and like $500,000 when they get married.

actually they sell the rights to drill oil to the US and other foreign bidders. so it does cost around the same amount to drill for oil there. their workers there are americans.
