  • 2008 Ducati 1098s for $4500? Please help.

So I was browsing Auto Trader and found this odd posting for a 2008 Ducati 1098s for $4500. I really couldn't believe that the price was so low so I decided to contact the seller and here has been the emails sent so far between myself and the other party. As you can read in my emails, I've been trying to keep myself as anonymous as possible. Here is the Auto Trader link: http://www.trader.ca/Search/Details....ADS=7562635%7C

Are you selling a 2008 Ducati 1098s for $4,500 on AutoTrader? If so, where are you located and why is the asking price so low? I am interested so please email me back as soon as possible.

    Thank you

    Regards

    Hello,

First I want to thank you for question about the 2008 Ducati Superbike. The bike is in perfect condition, no damage, perfect shape, the km's is 3,000. It has all the papers and document and I am also the owner. The price is $4,500 including the shipping to your address (only in Canada). The bike is registered in Canada on my name and address but currently I am located in Texas, USA, because I just finished the divorce with my husband and i have moved here to my new home with my children's.The bike is located in Canada at the shipping company and is ready to be shipped at your home. The transaction will be made through eBay vehicle purchase protection program also the payment will be made through eBay and only after you will receive the bike, I will receive the payment.

If you are interested in buying it please provide me your FULL NAME and ADDRESS so I can initiate the deal through eBay.
I will wait your answer(if you are interested to buy) very soon.

    Thank you,

P.S : If you really want to buy my bike and you are a serious buyer please send me your full name and shipping address.
    Hi (name of seller),

Yes, I am very interested in the bike but I think you can understand my hesitation of giving someone that has apparently divorced her husband and moved to Texas my full information without seeing them or seeing the actual product. I've heard a lot of stories around the internet and I think you can understand how difficult it is to believe some of them. Where is the bike located within Canada? I'd like to take a look at it before I purchase it. If it is close to my city then I don't mind picking it up and saving you money on shipping. I'm also wondering why you want to do the payment through eBay? I'm comfortable doing the payment through Paypal as long as you are ok with that as well. Please get back to me with the answers to my questions. I'm still very interested.

    Thanks
    Regards

    Hi again,

The bike is at the shipping company in Canada sealed and ready for shipping. I have a contract with eBay so this deal must go through them. According with eBay you have 5 days from the time you receive the bike to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not.
Here is how it will work:
First of all I will need the following details from you: full name, full shipping address. After I will receive the details from you, I will forward them to eBay. After they will process your info, they will send us both invoices. The invoice will send you the details on how to make a refundable payment. eBay will contact me and I will ship the bike to you. After you receive the bike you will have 5 days to test, verify and do whatever you want with the bike. If you will buy it, then I will receive the payment details from eBay so that I can pick up the money.
If you will decide that you will not buy the bike, eBay will refund the money and I will have the shipping company come pick up my bike. If you wish to make the transaction, please send me the necessary info so that we can proceed. I look forward to hear from you.

    Thank you!
The whole thing just seems a bit wonky to me. Why is she constantly stating for my full name and full address and what's this nonsense about dealing with it through eBay? I would appreciate some thoughts from the GTRC membership because you seem to have a firm grasp on spotting scams from a mile away. Just let me know how I should approach this.

    Thanks

thats a scam. the easiest way to quiet them is to ask the location of the item or in this case the shipping company and to reply to them "thats perfect. im currently in that area. would i be able to see the bike tomorrow?"

Thanks Ben, lol. I don't think going down to Texas will solve anything considering the number that is on Autotrader is from Kentucky plus the bike is being stored here in Canada.
The funny thing I also noticed on the Autotrader pics is that the roofing on the houses are clay shingles which are commonly used on houses in the southern states and the scenerey just doesn't look like anything we have here in Canada. oh, well. It was worth a try for a laugh at least.

heres my question how is knowing your full name and adress going to benefit them in any scam?
What purpose does that serve to them

Then they ask for your credit card info, or to send them a money order etc. It's just all part of the scam.

                  And if I could find a 1098s for under 5 K I'd already have one...(I don't). 145hp v-twin bike FTW.

You'd be surprised at the amount of people that get screwed by this. Everytime I sell a car, I always get someone wanting to trade some car and it sounds very similar to what is posted above. I send them a very short and to the point email. Not to mention they always try very hard to sound legit, but spell things weird or improper grammar.

I work at a Ducati dealership, and there is NO WAY in hell you can get an 08 1098 (let alone an "S") for $4500.

have you thought of the possibility of her getting the bike from her husband, (from the divorce), and now cause she has no use for it, and her husband allready hurts, she is trying to get rid of it?
1st: she might not know what its worth, or dont care
2nd: she wants it gone KNOW ,cause she doesnt want to ship to us, and has no use for it, and the storage costs money every day.
maybe it is a perfect world.
maybe the op did win the lotery.
