  • filipe massa in critical condition?

Didn't see anyone else post anything up.

I'm at work so I can't link youtube, but search it. Got nailed in the face w ith a spring and cracked his skull.

If someone else can link the video that would be cool.

wow thats messed up they say he is ok too go home in 10-14 days but i watched a few short video's and thats right bad luck.....

F1 has copyright'd alot of the videos so I was hard pressed even finding a good detailed one of the actual crash

Schumacher is thinking of coming out of retirement to drive in Massa's place since the incident left him with a damaged eye, meaning he can't drive anymore.

well I did a bit of searching and it looks like his reps are saying he would "consider coming out of retirement to drive for massa if ferrari asks"

the numbers were something like , the spring wieghed 100 pound and he was traveling at 150 , which turned it into a 1600lb coil . dont quote me on that but you get the idea

I read the coil was 1.5kg...but yeah scary stuff. Too bad one of the current top drivers gets taken out this way. One can only hope for a full recovery but if his eye suffered any permenent damage his career is over.

Very similar incident just a few weeks prior. John Surtee's son was hit on the head with a wheel that broke off another car. He was knocked out and ran straight into a barrier, died soon after. Massa, from what I hear, was hit on the head with a coil that broke off Alonso's car. At least two skull fractures, was put into an induced coma and is listed as in stable condition, last time I heard. Odds are against him driving on the F1 level again. Very unfortunate, he was a great driver, I hope he can make a comeback.
These two incidents spaced just weeks apart should put pressure on the FIA to revise some rules to increase safety.

Edit: Coil from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn.

the surtees incident was pure accident. two cars had collided which caused a wheels to come loose. the spring on the other hand just "popped" off a BrawnGP car (not Alonso's).

                      lol What?

                      The spring weighed 2.2 pounds.

                      Let's do some math here...

Let's say the spring shoots off the car, while it's going 120 miles per hour.

                      Filipe is traveling at 180mph.

Judging by my math, that's a huge hit into his face, at almost 30 pounds blunt trauma, however, I can't really see 1600lbs.

But still, try being hit by something as hard as you can that weighs 30 pounds, and you'd be in a coma too.

It will be a shame if this ends his career. Not a good way to end it. He's a wicked driver when he can keep his temper down.

Schumacher is listed as a test driver for Ferrari so if anyone gets called up to replace Massa it will be him... they have a month to figure it out.

I have noticed this year he has been much more calm and consistent...despite having a slow car through out most of this season.

My only question about Schumacher is...is he in good enough shape for racing again. Testing is one thing but to race you have to be in very good physical condition...not to mention even if Ferrari decide to go with him, he may turn down the offer.

Testing is actually more physically demanding than racing... have you seen what they do to ferrari's when they test them? they rat bag the hell out of it take it to the limit and beyond... im sure schumy is in fine phyiscal form... however will he have that same 'edge' he had before... i guess we will find out on his first few laps on a wet track, if he comes back...

as for massa, while his F1 carrer may be over... im sure he could get a spot in NASCAR.... lol
