  • FD3S Wheel opinion needed!

I bought a set of old school Work VS wheels. They are in pretty rough shape right now, but I will get them fixed and refinished. It's hard to see in the picture, but right now, the lip is polished and the spokes are painted silver. I'm thinking of getting the spokes painted Gun Metal or Black and leaving the lip polished. What do you guys think?
So far I'm leaning towards a Gun Metal paint.
My FD in Montego Blue BTW!

From the factory these would have had a polished lip with a painted spoke area. The paint over time just bubbles away from what I've seen.

If your going all out, I suggest having the wheels media blasted, re-polish the lip then tape if off to apply a base primer and final coat to the spoked area. Gun metallic would be nice.

Recently did a set with base black with a gun mettalic finisher. Great results out of cans. Just remember you'll need some actual wheel paint. Holts sells such. You'll need atleast two cans of base color + 1 can of finisher if you do it right. And don't forget about a silicone cleaner and 250-450 grit paper.

You need help? Maybe bring the lot up to the Chiba yard.

Are you kidding me? Those VS wheels will look great on that car. Classy yet a wee agressive.

Jocelyn, what size are they? Hoping 9.5J atleast.

Thanks Adam for the tips! I'm gonna let the professionals fix up those wheels.
They are in worst condition than I expected! (got them on Yahoo Auction)
All 4 wheels are severly curbrashed. 9.5J would have been nice , but the are 8J on the front and 9J in the rear. I think they will look decent on the car! At least it's a step up from the OEM wheels!

BTW, would you have any shop recommendations to get this work done?

Jocelyn, I've browsed G-Works magazine and theirs one shop in there specializing in wheel repair + custom steel wheel widening for classics like Hakoska's. Don't know the name off hand but they are in there. Best option for you.

I dont think many take this route in Japan at all. This stuff, just like turbochargers are disposable items. Broken, bent, whatever...people just ten to trash tehm. Like a lot of the stuff you see on yahoo lol... Ain't like back home where there are loads of repair options.

Found it. Shop called Kamagaya Wide Wheel 047-444-7801 Saitama I think.

In there advert they are showing 17" wheel repair at roughly 11,550 JPY. Mind you the display image is showing a massively bent wheel.

I think dark spokes with a polished lip would look great on your car Jocelyn, go for it!

oh ya, i forgot to comment on the actual wheels

I say go for gold, black or silver in the middle. and a "brushed" lip. Not a fan of polished lips.

I never really thought about painting the middle gold. That could look pretty nice too!
So far I still think I'm gonna go with gun metal. I think it woill go well with some CF bits I will put on the car!

are you going to be putting any aero pieces on the car?

Not really. I just want to change the front lip, add those RE Amemiya CF door handle cover, CF trunk lip spoiler and when I have more money, a vented CF hood.

Nice, I'd love to see the finished product. And I know the question's been asked before but are you going to replace the GT-R?
