  • can you explain what the "evap /purge" system is and how it works?

i was looking at this diagram from tyndagos website:

and i noticed there are 2 hoses going to the "canister" thing... in the diagram its highlighted in pink/purple. one to the body of the canister and annother out what seems to be the "cap" of it. where it says "nissan" on it.

i looked at my car and the cap does not have a return hose...instead its been blocked off with a rubber purpose meant stopper/plug.

i never asked questions about it before because i didnt know anything about this part. but please someone tell me what this system does and how important it might be for me to maybe get that hose hooked up onto there again?

    thanks,

It's an emissions device, it has a line running back to your fuel tank that catches fuel vapors and stores them. Under certain driving conditions it purges them into the manifold so they can be burnt instead of venting to atmosphere.

It's just more crap in the engine bay and places to leak, I'm removing mine.

On my 25, it had a line going to the intake manifold, one to the BOV recirc (iirc) and I simply capped those, and I put a new hose on the hardline fuel tank vent (runs along frame rail passenger side), and I have it vent into the passenger side wheel well. Don't know if I did it right, but it works. And theres no ugly canister in the bay anymore.

Emissions is its only purpose. Your gas tank builds up gas fumes inside the tank, and to prevent these gases from being vented to the atmosphere when you open the gas cap, they are "purged" into the engine during certain driving conditions.

Some call it a carbon canister. As far as I know it supposedly has a filter inside to filter gasses. From what I understand the filter is meant to be changed every once and while.

If you search it there is a basic how-to with removal.

I removed mine, as have a few of the other Western guys. I think we've even pulled one out at a meet in a parking lot before haha

I did mine the other day if you wanna come over tomorrow afternoon and check it out. I'm getting my body parts back so i'll be there all day assembling my car and getting it back on the road

It's really simple to pull out actually.. Matter of blocking the 2 lines out AT the plenum and either routing the fuel line breather source down and out the bottom where the black fitting is in the frame rail, or having it vent to atmos through a "filter". I didn't bother with a filter seeing as either way, gas fumes are going to vent.

Gimme a shout if you're down, otherwise it takes 10 min.
