  • Drivers Test w/ Manual Transmission and or RHD

    Hi all,

Thursday I go for my final test in Ontario's lovely yet useless graduated licensing system.

I decided to give myself a bit of a challenge though. Completing this may give me some bragging rights but I'm honestly in it more for the look on the examiner's face. Instead of taking my sister's 3spd Auto '95 Neon, I'll be taking my GT-Four which as you should know is only available with a 5spd and just happens to be RHD.

To get to the point, has anyone here had any experience with doing a test with a 5spd car and/or RHD? Any tips would be great too

    Wish me luck

im pretty sure a few guys on here have done it and there instructors thought it was unique a different

i mean, if you are following the rules and doing everything properly, they can't fail you because its RHD

I did my G test in my TT 300ZX with a 6puck clutch, 2700lb pressure plate, chipped ECU, full turbo back, and intake... was a blast.

I wanted to hold out until I got my GTR but I was impatient.

        That should be fun.

My friend did his N test in an early 90's dually ford. Clipped the curb and the examiner let him off haha

i did mine in a 5speed, the only thing u should watch out for is actually stopping at stop signs.. since we drive stick all the time we think we stop at stop signs but actually dont.
other than that.. take it in a rhd and let us know.. ive always been curious haha
          good luck

well if they don't like the rhd idea they will tell you. i took my 290hp Jetta and it was fine.. except for having to go the speed limit and keeping my eye on the speedometer. they wont take u on a 1hr test and fail u at the end because the car is rhd.. if you are confortable driving a rhd car do it.. or call them before the test

the one in oakville would not let me use a RHD car during the test said it would alter the instructors perspective.

I did it in a 5spd old BMW. I don't see why RHD would be an issue as long as you pay attention and follow the rules. It helps if you get a car guy.

My tester had owned the exact same car, 10 years earlier and he blabbed about it the whole time and didn't care what I was doing.

Save yourself the hassle take the neon. They cant fail you for "RHD" per say but they can fail you for whatever the hell else they want, and they will be more inclined to do so in an RHD. Unless you feel like gambling 150$ to fail because of your car choice, take the neon

I took my G2 test in my moms 5spd Mazda, it was quite easy. They told me they'd do a lot more inclined stuff to make sure you knew how to drive it and not roll back etc. The only thing I suggest you do before is ask about shifting in intersections. According to our handbook, you are not to shift gears in an intersection for fear of stalling etc. I asked and my tester told me if its a big intersection (2 left turn lanes) you are able to. Passed that one with flying colours, but stepped down to my auto honda for my g last month

Thanks for the advice here guys!

I hope I get an examiner who at least knows something about cars. I'm going to ask questions on some of the gear selection stuff, and also about parking a manual car. In the book it says to leave the car in gear and w/ hand brake, but if you get rear ended and the hand brake fails then the car will quite literally get away on you, but I say if the car is in neutral and gets rear ended it will just roll until it hits something.

Oh and also the tests here are only $75, so it's not as big as throwing away $150
