bmw oil change

so doing an oil change on my girlfriends uncles 91 318i and can not find out how much oil it needs . Searched the internets to only find what type is needed.
Does any one here know how many L it will take?

PS, owners manual only told me that i need API SH oil or something.

Put 3.5L in and check the level. If it needs more, add another 1/4L, and check again. When the level is at least halfway in the safe zone of the dipstick, run the engine for 5-10sec, and then re-check the level. Add until you are at the top of the safe zone.

That's your safe bet. Some odd European engines take up to 8L to fill, but most cars do around 4-5L.

I ended up tossing 4L and then 1/4L 'till it ended up being full. I was just hoping some one was reading it just as i posted this and had a quick reply for me haha.

Just in case any one else needs to know, it was 5L worth of oil.

Ah, I shoulda seen this yesterday. My buddy has a 318IS and we just did an oil change on it the other day :P
