  • This makes me sick - US Government vs Toyota

So the big news in Japan now is that it appears that the charge that Toyota withheld information and delayed recalls in the US is a big farce. It appears that the US Government was withholding information that Toyota cars involved in crashes did not have problems, and that it was the driver's error that caused the accident. So this would mean that there weren't any problems with the cars to begin with, and any recall would not be needed.
This information would exonerate Toyota, and clear their name completely of any wrongdoing.

But now that the US Government has GM, a strong Toyota would hurt them wouldn't it?
So is the Government intentionally trying to destroy Toyota by spreading lies and deceit?
It certainly is a fishy story.

Also, GM just bought Americredit for 3.5 billion dollars. Yes, BILLION. Ummm, 2 years ago GM was crying and asking for massive handouts from the Government because they were going to go bankrupt. Where on earth do they come up with 3.5 billion to invest in other companies?
Or was that a farce too? Did they really have money in the bank, and just wanted to take advantage of an "economic crisis" and get a massive pile of cash from the Government?

It's sometimes really hard to tell what is truth, and what is lie from the US.
I can tell yo one thing though, Japanese media is reporting this all over the place now, it will be interesting to see where the story goes.

    What do you think?

    Here is the article:

Remember how Toyota was slapped with a $16.4m fine for allegedly withholding information and delaying recalls? Remember how Toyota was served again with a subpoena for information, what many read as the prelude for another $16.4m fine? (If anyone again says that $16,4m is pocket change, please send me the pocket change.) Well, there are some people in Washington who claim that it’s the U.S. government that might be withholding information.

According to Dow Jones Newswire (via The Nikkei [sub] ) “the Obama administration came under pressure to disclose more information about its investigation of Toyota Motor Corp. with congressional Republicans questioning whether officials are withholding data that could favor Toyota in some crashes.”

Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, the senior Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, sent a letter to NHTSA, asking them to fork over crash data that, according to articles in the Wall Street Journal and TTAC article published last week, proves that in many crashes, the driver had his or her foot on the gas instead of the brake.

The Journal said they had it from “people familiar with the crash-data test results” and Joe Barton thinks thos people might be at the NHTSA. As far as the NHTSA or the DOT are concerned, mum’s the word. There are other people who point fingers at Toyota and say that it was Toyota who “planted” that story, but Barton isn’t buying it.

Barton sent a strongly worded letter to NHTSA boss David Strickland, The letterwas also signed by Energy and Commerce Committee members Reps. Ed Whitfield (R., Ky.) and Michael Burgess (R., Texas). The letter says that “it is important for us to know whether NHTSA has EDR data showing that some incidents of reported sudden unintended acceleration were the result of pedal misapplication.”

The Republicans wave a big stick: They point out in the letter that the House is expected to vote soon on a far-reaching vehicle-safety bill that would up the financial ante considerably, and could even land car executive in jail. Subliminal message: If you want that law to pass anytime soon, hand over the information. Too bad there is no clause in any law that the fine gets refunded if the government withholds information. That’s not the way it works.

I always felt there was something fishy about this whole story! And I find it hard to beleive that a car accelerating on it's own could't be stopped and caused crashes. I also think it was driver error! Or if it really is out of control, why nobody thought of sticking the car in neutral and brake? You might rev the crap out of an engime that way and mabe blow it up but at least it will stop!
Now Toyota should sue the U.S government for tarnishing their reputation!

This is the only way that GM can compete anymore - Dirty Pool.
Now that Ford has reached JDM quality (thanks in no big part to Mazda....lol) GM is left in the dust and has to think of other ways to level the playing field.
          I hope Toyota sues.

There was a few recalls I guess. We own a tacoma which had nothing to do with the recall but there was one still available to trim the gas and brake pedals and reprogram the ECU to disable throttle when the brakes are applied. When I asked why, they said people stacked too many floor mats (summer/winter) which caused the pedals to get caught. When I mentioned that going in neutral and using the hand brake, the office guy laughed and said not everyone has driving common sense. There are some pretty stupid accidents out there. Anyways, the funny part is that our truck CAME with 2 stacked floor mats which sometimes got caught so we quickly upgraded to a custom moulded set to replace both. So really, they kinda are at fault however some people out there most likely do stack floor mats. Either way, it's retarded what has happened so far. Go GM! from broke to rich in no time, thanks mr gov't.

Hmmm, I'm not buying it yet. Toyota is not stupid. They would have seen the same data. They would not spend billions on a recall unless they felt they were at fault. I don't think they took someones word for it. The other issue is it's tough to have a recall to fix a "problem" if it does not exist. They would need to show that the "fix" would acctually fix the "problem". They did not just install random parts and hope for the best. They would have needed to reproduce the fault and show it could not happen with the fix in place.

not buying it either. i work for mazda and even the slightest report of car problems gets us engineers from Japan overnighted to come check it out personally and run tests for days at a time

Having dealt with all the recalls for toyota I agree with Jason if there were no problems they would not be paying the dealers big money to complete them. We cut the gas pedals accordingly to a jig provided by toyota and reprogram the ecu with the new brake over ride software, we don't touch the brake pedal just want to make that clear. The newest thing we do now is modify the shape of the floor to further prevent and possibility of a customer having their foot jam on the gas pedal. We do several of these recalls every day so toyota knows there is a concern and this is the best method to resolving them.

And as for this floor mat thing common sense should come in and ring a bell for any driver only use one mat per season if you stack them ofcourse its likely the gas pedal, brake pedal, or clutch pedal could get stuck down. I think it would benefit new drivers to know how to stop a vehicle and back many years ago when I did driver training they don't go in depth enough if a situation comes up of a sticking accelerator either throttle cable or drive by wire designs. Put the car in nuetral, shut it off, or fu**ing ham on the brake pedal with both feet it will stop the car. I had a good laugh at the old guy driving the prius who had to call 911 to top the car. The brakes were proven to not been used excessivly and the shifter is right beside the steering wheel pop that in nuetral and coast to a stop hmm.

YouTube - 2010 Toyota Prius brake problems. Easy fix, amazing documentary

Awesome video this guy is priceless.

We had that article brought to us and I read it and though there was definitly something fishy going on with the US govt and how
things were handled. its great that with all the tests done 100% of them were all driver error not the vehicle. Toyota got a huge set back as a result of all the bad press it did affect us huge. Sales and service dropped big time and I feel now that our customers have regained faith back in the Toyota product being so solid.

I think Toyota's recall efforts have a lot to do with the fact that Akio Toyoda had only just stepped into power when the **** hit the fan so-to-speak. Oh yeah, doesn't that seem like impeccable timing too? It was very obvious at the beginning of all this that he was quite out of the loop, and very un-prepared for such a total PR collapse. He panicked and I for one don't blame him, he went from one day inheriting one of the best automakers in the world and the next everybody is beating up on him about how crappy his company is. He saw reason to appease the mob, and take a hit so that he could get some time to dig up the records and see what went wrong. It was a very good decision under pressure, and I think that the ability to accept that changes could be made to improve the company, even if the company is not at fault is a very good move.

I called bull**** on all this from the very beginning, from the Big 3's standpoint it was just too good to be true. I hope this gets uncovered big time so that Toyota can get on with things. Don't get me wrong, I think they have been lacking as of late, but I think that as far as bringing them back to what they once were this may actually be for the better. Toyota has gotten to a state where they are much like GM has been, and that is too big for their own good. If they get rid of the penny pinching accountants who ignore quality and safety for bigger profits, and just focus on making great cars that people want to buy, then they will be much better in the end. I cringe every time I hear cost cutting when applied to automotive manufacturing. It's not a matter of how little money can I spend to put this car together, it should be how well can I put this car together so that more people will want to buy it, so we can get back our manufacturing costs and turn a profit? That's one thing all the big automakers are lacking right now.

Update: NHTSA: No evidence of electrical problems with Toyota — Autoblog

Looks like all the rumors about the report were true. I'm not saying Toyota is completely off the hook, but it is obvious they aren't the bastards they were made out to be... I wonder if the NHTSA officials who blew this thing out of proportion will be travelling to Toyota City to attend a hearing of why such claims were made with insufficient evidence to back them?

THANK YOU! I am also so irritated with all these Toyota allegations. Just because the japanese are excelling with they're automakers worldwide, doesn't make it justifiable to allow the US to tarnish and bring down Toyota along with Chev and GM.. I'm still a kid, but even i can see this is wrong. My parents both have combined to own 5 Toyotas in they're life to date, and when im not rolling with my 32, my dad's new corolla is a breath of fresh air. Im just saying...
