Needless to say, drinking and driving deaths plummeted. Even a single life saved is worth it, no?
So is that why all these VIP cars have built in bars? lol

I've seen tons of drivers swerving or not paying attention due to cell phones. Drinking and driving is responsible for something like 33% of the driving related deaths in Canada. I have so many friends who think it's cool to drink and drive, so much so that its become the social norm. That scares the crap outta me. I don't want to share the road with these idiots, or anyone else who's under the influence of drugs or alcohol. I'm glad something is FINALLY being done about it. My entire time driving (about 5.5 years) I've only ever been through 2 roadblocks that were checking for drinking and driving.

With that said, I think the speeding law is ridiculous. Like M13 said, what about roads where drivers CONSTANTLY go 40 km over (coquahala, hwy 1, etc)? You're going to get your car impounded for keeping up with traffic? Sure, in a 50km/h zone, or in a residential/ school zone its a great law, but I think thats where it's usefulness ends. I'm not someone who rips around, but I usually go 10-15 above the speed limit. On roads where everyone else is doing 20-40km over then I'll stay with traffic. In cases like that, going the speed limit is more dangerous than doing 20-40 over since you're no longer keeping up with traffic, and this forces other drivers to either brake or switch lanes to get around you.

Speeding related car accidents are way at the bottom of the list (number 8), whereas driver stupidity and drinking are all ranked higher. Get the crappy drivers off the road if you really want to make it safer.

Here's a link of the 10 leading causes of car accidents http://caaneo.ca/about/blog/driving/...-to-avoid-them
I said something about this on another site... the only two places I am worried about the law is 1) The Coq.. 2) Missing a sign where it goes from something stupid like 90kph to 50kph (Pat Bay going east the the ferries for instance). Whats to say you were changing lanes or shoulder checking when passing the sign and next thing you know a pig is sitting on the side of the road ready to take your car away.

The rest of the time I'm not concerned because I usually park myself at 100kph or so on the #1 and follow the city speed limits to a "tee" because speeding IN a city is absolutley retarded.

In Cuba it is legal for the driver to drink, as long as he's not currently driving. They usually stop on the side of the road for a minute, have a couple sips, then return to the road...LOL
