One of my math teachers showed me this once. It's pretty cool because its the same concept I have always used to multiply large numbers in my head. This is actually just an illustration of how expanding brackets works. Break each number apart into ones, tens, hundreds, etc and multiply the brackets. In the first example 21x13.
examine as
(20+1)(10+3) = 200+60+10+3 = 273
In each column in the graph is the same. in the hundreads column 2 (200) in the tens column is 6+1 (60+10) and in the ones column 3 (3).

A good brainwashed though. Id honestly rather have kids like that. Then kids who can memorize the order or their tv shows. OR what video game/computer system come out on what day.
