Gee I better keep the BBS wheels on my car then. As a CA who is taking the final exam to become a Trustee in Bankruptcy in the spring I find these reports very interesting to read. Wish there were more details.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. They were making a lot of wheels for other people too, surprising they went bankrupt like that.

BBS Kraftfahrzeugtechnik AG began in 1970 in Schiltach Germany by Heinrich Baumgartner and Klaus Brand as a manufacturing plant for plastic auto body parts. The initials BBS are based on the last names of the two founders and the city in which the company was founded (Baumgartner, Brand, Schiltach).[2]
In 2007 BBS went bankrupt and was taken over by the Belgian firm Punch International.

                    (cont)

Japanese company "Washibeam Co., Ltd" manufactures the BBS F1 Magnesium wheel and All racing Aluminum wheels.[6] Since BBS is a customer of Washibeam, manufacture of the wheel will not be discontinued if BBS goes bankrupt.
                    [7]

So if it happened before we can expect them to bounce back. Also the second paragraph shows they're outsourcing some wheel designs that can still be in market after the dissolution of the brand.

They've been manufacturing Porsche OEM wheels since... mmm the 70's? Strange that their capital wasn't greater, especially with the number of cars being sold with their brand of wheel. I believe they also make wheel upgrades for other high end car manufacturers as well.. Too bad. Weird to see such a large company go under, makes you wonder how the rest of them are keeping their head out of the water.

Filing for bankruptcy doesn't mean they are out of business.

In canada when a Company files for bankrupcy that acts to cancel the charter of the Company, which means it does go out of business permanently. Not sure about in Germany.

That being said for a large company like that, almost always some other Company will buy up all the assets as well as the intellectual property and begin operating it under a new legal entity.
