  • Well, not buying a gtr soon...

Background... Started university in chemistry in 2005, Switched to secondary education so that I could stay in northern New brunswick. All in all, it's been 6 years and I'm graduating in april 2011. Because I did'nt finish my bacchelor?? (bacc.) in the recommended 5 years, I'm not entitled to get my 40% refund. Even thought I payed 1 year my self.

All in all, me and my gf have 110 000$ in dept and no jobs...

I thought I was doing the right thing by going to University, but I should of followed my idea of being a millwright.

So I don't see my GTR R33 anywhere close...

Just has to let it out.

    Cheers

Oh that really sucks. As long as your degree will get you a more lucrative career than a mill wright it would be worth it.

I did the opposite (trade first, school second) and I'm regretting it.

Sorry to hear that Nick, really am. I wouldn't give up if I were you though. You're graduating soon and I'm sure there's a need for teachers, but maybe not up north but there's somewhere out there. That debt is big but the payments can be stretched enough for you to actually still save up money right now. Later you can open up the payments when you're more secure.

Make a budget and sit on it, there's hope. It's easier as a couple too, pay necessities together but keep your spending money to yourself if you can. I'm not saying you can't have a GTR soon btw, you're just in a tight spot.

For example I'm living alone in a basement, doing my research. I keep my spending to a minimum when I hang out. I'm living close to the university so I fill up the sentra once per month, at most. I try to save money on anything. I've been wearing the same pair of jeans for the past year. Can't say I'm living a great life but I'm greateful for what I have.

Just remember you have a healthy family, a wicked GF and friends. And you got bigger balls in my book than ppl back home who don't take mature risks and just live for the bluecollar money and a self-served lack of education.

get your education man. dont even worry about the debt. hardest part is knowing in the future it will all work out. GTR is cool. but your life is far more important. they will be there when you are ready.

I know education is 10000X more important then a car, but I'm tired of being shafted by the same government I'll be working for.
By the way, I love teaching and would not trade it for the world.
Thanks for your kind words everyone!

P.S. Anyone know if there are teaching jobs close by lol. Willing to go anywhere. Already had interviews for NWT, sask. NB...

Man don't sweat it, I went to university for 7 years (1 years applied informatique, 2 years engineering, 3 years accounting,
finished in Finance lol), and I'm not even in my field. but I did work ma ass off ( even went 2 years and a half strait working,
ok not strait did take 5 days off 1 summer lol). Just because I didn't want any debt, and 3 month after I graduated I had
payed every penny I owed. Would I do it again ? Probably. Is it for every one ? I really don't think soo.

I hate to say this but the best and smartest thing you can do in New-Brunswick with a proper education, is leave.

The media try to tell us that we need more qualified workers, but that's just not true, we have plenty of qualified
workers in the province, unfortunately employers around here don't won't to pay a premium for them, most
employers don't look long term. They will only hire on the last minute, don't even want to give proper training, and
most don't even do proper back ground check. So we have bad employee that go from jobs to jobs, applying to
every jobs they see, overworking the personnel in charge of recruitment a lot of the time. How is that hurting
good possible employee, well do you really think they go trough all the CV they receive ? Well not really.
Hell I already had a job where the only way to get fired was if they caught you stealing, why ? They didn't want
to bother with the paper work. Why you wonder ? Well management where uneducated, underpaid and over work.
And couldn't care less if the staff was a bunch of kids running around. And why where they not fired ? Simple who
would replace them ? If they fired a manager, they would need to train an other, that would accept to work
45-50hr/week on 40hr/week salary at 12-13$/hr. If you actually take the time and calculated it mean your working
              for about 10$/hr.

I was even told a couple of time that my education combine with my work experience, made me over qualified for
some jobs. They said the same thing to one of my sister, aldo she has a Bachelor in Chemistry and a Doctor's in Admin.

They just doesn't want to pay. I live in Moncton and every one seam to be moving here. And really it's a nice place, but
just stop and take a look at jobs posting, they are everywhere. But just take the time and have a look at them. About
90-95% percent are minimum salary, With almost no chance or really low pay increase. Hell I went from controller of a
multi-million dollars stores to working in the liquors store, and making more money while doing half the work. It really kills
me because I love working in an office and the responsibility, but they want to pay you 14.5-16$/hr on 40hr/week salary,
but expect that your going to work 45-50hr/week and want you to run a store that relies on customer service, like a wall mart
,it just doesn't work. They are slowly killing customer service, and wondering why people go shopping online.

If your wondering why I'm still here, I've been with the same girlfriend for over 8 years. I like to believe that she is worth it,
but every one has there limit, and I'm pretty sure mine is fast approaching.

The best thing I could suggest is to go teach in Nunavut or somewhere around there, they pay extremely well, I know that
probably doesn't really sound attractive. But it's good experience, and they pay for a lot of expenses, because not a lot of
people are not willing to go there. And look at it this way, when you come back you'll have experience, and really, around here
it seam to be one of the most important thing, after if they know your parent. lol

              Good Luck

              Edit:
Damn, guess my post was to long again, and you beat me to it. ( Already had interviews for NWT )

I've been wondering if I should find a job after my masters to get a garage and work on the GTR, or let it gather dust and go for a doctorate. I really don't know what to do. I'm just givin'r in the blue yonder right now, not really sure where I'm going.

It's tough man. Sometimes I wake up wanting to give up, doing nothing all day, sometimes I wake up at 8am and work till 2am.

Anyway Nick, I can relate from a different perspective.

Nick you're still in a better position than most of us, cause when you're done schooling you'll have the wallet to support this hobby. Just gotta giv'er for now, itll pay off in the long term and hope see yourself in a 33 in the short term!

if you've got any sort of steady income, I can build up a financial plan for you to pay off your debts and save for your car.

@ JZ The same day I was informed about my financial situation you posted the motivation thread lol. Made me smile

@ raijin-xiii That's crazy nice of you but I don't have a steady income yet (graduating in april). But if it's ok with you, as soon as I have one meaby you could take a quick look at my situation.

Thanks guys! If ever your kids need help in chemistry or something close and you're in Moncton NB I'll help them out lol!

Sorry to hear bro... Shoulda became a tradesman and move to Alberta. Word out there is that a first year, out of highschool with no experience, can start as high $35/hr and as low as $20 some/hr for residential. I've seen some kick up $100,000 gross in 1 year but they didn't get much time off.

Have you thought of changing to a technical career?
