Whats the "dumbest" you have done while working on a vehicle?

Today I took my gtr for a quick loop around the block to warm it up before doing a comp test. Battery was dead, so we gave it a boost, then buddy and I hop in. We get out on the front street and I open her up (not to hard) just shift into 3rd at about 60k when for the first time in 24 years of working on cars, I realized I forgot to make sure the hood was secured

Thankfully the only thing to get facked was the hood and hinges, no broken glass or bashed in roof..

Anyone else pull something as stupid as this?

    Changing wheels..
Was amazed of how nicely it was constructed.
Driver side rim mounted, still drooling of its curve when I decided to give it a slight push...

To my suprise, my finger was still holding one of the spoke..

    Rim +1 Me = 0

I over tightened the oil cap on my 3cyl swift 2 summers ago and pushed it hard on the highway, the top of the cap blew off leaving the threats still in the valve cover and oil spewing all over my engine bay.

Um spending 5k on a honda motor build and built the motor over night with a few buddies and a few beers and a broken torque wrench which we found out 2 days after the dyno and after the build when a rod went and the rod bolts were finger tight X_X never gna get that 5k bak live and learn. Its benefited me today as I now do everything legit and check it twice

done this ... driving home one day down the highway and couple guys pulled up beside me in a gtr and a 300zx. So we stop, talk , show our cars off and i forgot to click my hood down and put my pins in. Go to take off doing about 40 and the hood flys up smashing the hood in half, breaking the windshield, and denting the roof in too

Yeah I forgot the hood pins in my rabbit Gti once, bent the hood and hinges as well as cracking the windshield. I was mad at myself for weeks.

was 16, with a 1985 scirocco. my dad and i were changing the washer fluid, cuse dad (a chevy guy to the bone, but liked vdub's over fords) put coolent in it. so after we washed it out. DAD put the hood down and didnt latch it. so i was late for work the next day doing 90km down the road didnt even get a 1/4 mile and she came up with a thud. lights out, "keep the wheel straight yells the old man" (yeah had the G1 and he was taking it home after i got to work) ofcorse i was i was alittle in shock. slowed her down peled the hod down whent home to get bungycordes and then whent back to work. when i got home i srtatened the cowl and hod a little. but no windshield or sunroof damage, the hinges just came off the pins and the vw's hooks held the hood from flying. dad was mad and so was i but life goes on. last month he turned 80 and me 27.

Well this is kinda funny.... I was doin some welding and jamming out to some music when I felt something hot.... I was wearing a Nike shirt and it had caught one of the sparks off the welder or from wherever and my shirt was on fire. I laughed and put it out. It wasn't bad as I was wearing 2 shirts underneath the Nike one so it was funny. Every time after that though I made sure I wore a different type of materialed shirt.
Miss driving sooooo bad! Need to get a car on the road ASAP!

I haven't had any mishaps in the GTR. But 2 summer ago I was changing the plugs in my MS3 to one heat range colder. I got distracted by a phone call and forgot to gap them correctly before throwing them in the car. I got the car warmed up then floored it in 3rd, hit 20PSI, and got mad misfiring.

Then I limped it home off boost and re-gapped the plugs properly.

I changed my plugs the day before a race at Suzuka. Went out for the warm-up lap, car ran well, half way around the first lap the engine started stuttering and I couldn't go over 3000rpm....I limped back to the pits, slammed the door, swearing and mad because I thought the engine had pooped on me. As I sat there cooling down with the car still on, I noticed the idle was fine. Got under the hood, did a few checks, and noticed that the clip from the coil harness to the ignitor hadn't been properly clipped in :P Got her fixed and ready to go....just as the racing session ended

My oil filter was being a total bitch to screw on so I got this genius idea! I'll just unscrew the thread piece on the relocation kit... screw it into the filter and then back onto the plate. Well as you can imagine, whilst "threading" it back onto the plate it was only screwing into the oil filter even more. Not even 5km down the road oil everywhere....

I was ripping out my Ac and was undoing a bolt that I thought was just holding a line (in place) right between my headlights. To my suprise the was a banjo style bolt and Coolant gas exploded in my face and vented like a mad man..... sorry environment.

I dont feel so bad now.
I had a leaking slave cylinder and master cylinder. I would have to bleed it bout twice a day by that point. Anyways, was in a rush to get to work on time. Bled my master and slave but for some reason I didnt latch the hood all the way down. Took off for work, hit bout 80km/hr, hood flew up, hit roof. It ended up denting my roof and busting the clips on my sunroof. Lucky it didnt break any glass, but ugly slight ripples on roof now and a sunroof that dont work(but doesnt leak). The redundant latch(1st click) wasnt fully holding hood down, whoever in Japan put the intercooler in moved the horns under the hood latch and wouldnt let the latch completely hold the hood. Otherwise, i would have been fine. I seriously debated on ever working on my car anymore, couples days later I was elbows deep in her again. Figured my worst work would be the local shops best work.
In the end, Removed said horn, Got new used hinges, Used hood and Brand new OEM master and slave.

Oh, and after my hood flipped up, phoned up work, "sorry Im not comin in, my hood went Inside Out"
Also a big huge mega Thank You to turboed08(Nick) for givin me a same colour hood for the price of a coffee. I havent seen him to give him his coffee, I think I now owe Nick a Sandwich combo. Haha.
