MCM: Pod filters mythbusted

Interesting post / test. Does not simulate the forced induction of air on the road / hiway speed. I believe that`s where higher quality filters and pod filters excel; and perhaps change the results of their test. IMO air intake with high quality filter vs. pod filter is really a matter of preference. I`m running the stock box, though like the idea of going pod to free up some room. Makes for good discussion.

Interesting.
One thing that test is missing is adjusting ECU tune to suit, as that is where the hp gains are the biggest. Also on the turbocharged car the A/F ratio is probably already lean due to chip, so adding podfilter made boost level rise and A/F ratio probably was too lean. Basically not adding fuel to match the increase in boost level probably would make hp drop.
Podfilter is supposed to increase boost level 0.1bar which leans out A/F ratio and that is where the extra hp comes from. It's not uncommon to see 8rwkw gains over factory with good podfilter on turbocharged engine with factory exhaust, etc (I think with bonnet up). With bonnet down power should drop due to higher intake temps (why factory use a airbox).

Andre Simon from STM dyno tests some of New Zealand's most popular Cold Air Intakes for Holden Commodores. We let you know which Over The Radiator Cold Air ...
Note when ECU is tuned to suit aftermarket filter, there's a bigger gain in hp, but without ECU tune to suit there's minimal to no gain. Also note that when using a bigger filter element, more air enters engine and mixed with ECU tune to suit the engine produces the most hp.
Then look at Gibson Group-A 32GTR and you'll notice the same bigger filter element is used on top of top radiator support (same location) -
ECU tune plays a big role, so does intake temps, filter size, etc. If you look at filter test's you'll notice the bigger filters + ECU tune to suit produce more hp.Last edited by Skym; 05-07-2012, 03:45 AM.RESPONSE MONSTER
